Hi ! I'm French studying here in Rio de Janeiro as an exchange student. I lived two weeks at the new - they've moved - Brazuca's place, Rua Santa Clara, just two blocks from the beach. I'm posting now because the former comments I'm reading here are just too differents compared to my experience - less than 2months ago !! my journey was awesome! I arrived the 6th of March and was warmly welcomed by Dora and her daughter Rita who are managing the new hostel. I stayed in a 8beds room for 35rs per night
good Breakfast to face my so looong days and nights, they adviced me as well for tourism as for everyday life stuffs. I used the kitchen and internet wireless, etc and met a lot of travellers, even brazilian - and foreign - families, in a friendly atmosphere!
I finally found an appartment and had to move but I can strongly recommand this hostel para visitar a cidade maravilhosaaaa :)

My husband and I stayed here during our 1 week visit to Rio for Carnival 2008.

We booked a special carnival package that included dorm beds and free breakfast (consisting of bread, cheese and fresh fruit). The price was severly inflated for what you get BUT it is Carnival and Rio during this time is incredibly pricey.

Originally their website displayed incorrect prices and when we booked online and followed up with a phonecall we were told that the prices were incorrect (we had payed too little) and that the price would be much higher. We accepted this because there was not too many other options considering it was carnival time.

The rooms are really cramped with 2 x 3 tier bunk beds. The top one is dangerously close to the roof and while we were staying a girl got up and her head hit the fan and she needed a fair few stitches. Try and secure a bottom or middle bunk if you can!

You can choose either a shared bathroom or attached bathroom. The rooms smell quite musty and damp because some of the rooms are internal (ie the windows lead to ajoining hallways - not windows).

There are 2 PC's for internet (which costs). One computer was not working for a week so it was hard to even get on and check the internet anyway. It is cheaper to go down the road and use the local internet cafes.

The hostel is in a great location, only 5 minutes from Copacabana Beach and the various all you can eat buffets which are great value.

There were lockers which were big enough for a small day pack not your big rucksack. Keep your valuables with you.

The staff are friendly and some speak English. Some speak only a few words which can be quite tricky...but you manage.

Overall a reasonable place but I would be looking for other options should we return to Rio....who knows maybe it just wasnt nice considering it was carnival time.
