This is a pleasant enough place in the Santa Teresa neighbourhood. It is not central, but that was one of our reasons for choosing here. That said, it is easy enough to get to the main tourist areas - a bus from a nearby street gets you down the hillside and to a tube station, and taxis are always a reasonably priced option. For those who don't speak Portuguese, the owners provide you with a handy piece of paper which gives directions to the taxi drivers, and using this we never had any problems getting a lift back in the evening.
The area is nice, and in many respects it feels a world away from crowded Rio de Janeiro. Jungle-like vines have crept their way across telegraph poles and lines, and monkeys put in regular appearances. We felt perfectly safe walking around, even after dark. And within a ten minute stroll there are a wide range of bars and eateries, with something to suit different pockets and tastes.
Our room was comfortable and tastefully done. We were at the top of a spiral staircase, but the friendly staff had no problem getting our cases up there. For us it was fine, but if you are slightly unsteady on your pins or have problems getting about, there are a number of steps to go up and down.
If you are looking for a peaceful place in a quiet but not too remote area of bustling Rio, then this may well be the place for you.
