My wife and I have been going to Lamas since the late 1970s. While we have tried most of the items on the menu, we repeat the same dishes quite often like lingua ao molho madeira com purée (tongue with madieira sauce and mashed potatoes), carne assada. However, the restaurant prides itself on having the best filet mignon in town. I have tried it and it is outstanding. Most dishes will feed two people. The draft beer is always cold.
One of the strongest points at Lamas is the waiter service that is done by true professionals that start at Lamas when young and remain there until retirement.

Yes, it's kind of shabby. Yes, there's a tv turned on all the time. Yes, the service can be rude once in a while. Yes, it can be expensive. But it's a place not to be missed.
Cafe Lamas has been around for more than 100 years and it has remained true to its origin. It serves delicious filets in the brazilian tradition in a worn-out bohemian atmosphere. It has been a hang-out for journalists, students, musicians and lawyers for decades. It can be a late night snack place, a pre-night out spot or a classic after-the-beach late lunch restaurant.
The delicious Filet a Oswaldo Aranha (medium rare steak, lots of fried garlic and potato chips) is a brazilian bohemian classic dish and Cafe Lamas is where the filet meets its best in Rio de Janeiro.

Last month, I had dinner with a great friend from our family from the UK, who came to Brazil to promote the launching of a book he wrote ( and was now published ) locally. He used to go there in the 70`s.

Cafe Lamas is one of the oldest restaurants in Rio, and used to located at Largo do Machado. The restaurant is visited by many "intellectuals" and artists, but definitely lost its quality, specially in terms of service and "general atmosphere".

The dinner per say, was not bad, I had a salmon, but the side portion was minimal. And yes, not all, but many waiters do feel as if they are "doing you a favor" , when serving you or taking orders. Many have that "common, I am waiting" kind of attitude.[, when you are still choosing from the menu.

Prices are overcharged, even if you convert to US$ or Euros. To prove this, I double checked one Lamas´ "old time classics", which is a chicken soup, served when people came back from night clubs or parties. R$ 25,00 !! ( with service tax included). I guess its too much for such a simple dish.

I would not recommend, since today top service is one of my number 1 criterion, when selecting a place to dinner or have lunch.

There are many other new restaurants that will go lengths to keep you coming back, and Lamas seems to have lost themselves in the past, maybe "living on the glory days", unfortunately. I hope they change their attitude, since like I said above, some of their dishes are indeed considerably above average, in terms of the food per say.

I went there with my husband on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and realized it's one of the best traditional restaurants in Rio. Service for me is top rated - if you speak portuguese - and the food is absolutely delicious. Definitely the best milanese steak in town. The place is a bit old and I wouldn't have any thought of going there if it wasn't for the cuisine. It is not cheap but it is very well served.

Good food and beverages, fair price and service. Almost never closes, so migh be a good option after a party or a disco night.
