“Casa 579 made me fall in love with Rio”
Reviewed September 6, 2011

I just want to say first up that i have never written a travel hotel review in my life, but feel that Casa 579 is very deserving of my time and energy! From the moment we arrived at CAsa 579 we were provided great information and felt truely at home. Vadir was unbelieveable! He recommended so many great places in the area and beyond to visit, and really made the time to make you feel like a valued visitor. We absolutely loved staying in Santa Teresa and felt like it was a much more genuine experience than had we stayed nearer to the beaches. The view was unbelieveable, I had to pinch myself to think how lucky we were. The breakfast overlooking the trees and great view beyond was sensational! We got to meet some lovely people who were also staying there and I loved travelling in the combi vans into town. It wasnt a hassle at all and made you feel more like a local. I felt safe and looked after and couldnt recommend this property more!

While I was living in Rio, a friend of mine recommended this pousada as a nice way to get away from the hustle of Ipanema/Copacabana. I went to visit him a couple of times and was just smitten by the roof deck and the view.

So, when I was looking for a place to stay after I had moved out of Copa, I immediaely thought of Casa 579. The price was right, the view is incredible, the guys are nice and knowledgeable and it's in Santa Teresa! Can't ask for much more. Bar do Gaucho is up there too and their lunch specials are amazing.

If you like Santa Teresa or are just looking for a quiet place to hang out, this is the spot. Thanks Teresa and all the rest!

Big rooms well decorated with wonderful views. Friendly staff, which can always help you.
Safety location not far away from metro station (5-10 min by van). Tasty breakfasts. I will return to Casa 579.

We originally booked in to Casa 579 for 5 nights while staying in Rio, after these five nights we moved hostel just to see another part of Rio, within 2 nights we had moved back for another 5 nights!! We are soon returning to Rio and guess where were heading??? Yes Casa 579!

Casa 579 is situated in a beautiful location with amazing vista views of Sugar Loaf and Christ the redeemer, the 3rd story roof terrace is stunning and a great place to relax after a hard days sight seeing.

The location of the hostel may appear remote but its perfect, there is numerous easy cheap ways to get to any part of the city from here, you can be in Centro in 15 minutes, Copacabana in 30 minutes. You can even walk to Christ the redeemer in 1 hr 30 to avoid the cost of the train ride (for the budget travellers).

The breakfast here is amazing, all kinds of fruit, different types of breads, cheese, ham, fruit juice, coffee, granola, eggs....

The hostel is clean and tidy, the kitchen is large and well equipped.

The staff are amazingly helpful and are on hand to assist with any query you have. The staff were even able to help us plan our itinerary for Bahia!!!

We cannot recommend this place enough its one of the best hostels we have stayed in.

Be aware the bus numbers to get to the hostel have changed and are now 006 and 007, also these buses cannot be caught from the rodoviara but from Centro and Lapa. To get to the hostel from the Rodoviara its best to get a bus to Lapa and change here.

We stayed here as part of our round the world trip. The staff are very helpfull and friendly. The location is great, fantastic views of christ the redemer and sugar loaf mountain. The area is safe, we walked back at dusk and never felt threatned, it is up a hill so if you dont want to walk jumpon the bus, its cheap enough. There is a restaurant 5 mins from the hostel that do a good lunch time special.
The rooms are ok. There is a resident dog, if you dont like dogs you may have a problem but he's a lovely dog. The other dogs can be a nightmare and bark from early hours but thats everywhere, they have lots of stray dogs in Rio so this cant be avoided.
The hot tub was not in use when we were there but it didnt bother us. Excellent bus service from the hostel, All your wants are covered. The breakfast is AMAZING, fruit, toast, fresh bread rolls, cheese, ham, cakes, cereals, yogurts, juices, eggs. Gorgeous.

If you long to stay in Rio amidst friends, explore it off the usual tracks and maybe even just look for a quieter, more relaxed corner to stay, then Casa 579 is your place. As a warning: you are nowhere near the beaches, and getting down to the tourist stretches requires riding the bus, the community van or a taxi. Your reward though it staying in the midst of what is probably the most liveable, cool and artsy neighborhood in Rio (or so the avantgarde in the 20's thought), with close-up views from your window to Corcovado and Sugar Loaf. You'll meet lovely personnel who speaks English fluently (for the few of us who aren't fluent in Portuguese), and you'll soon make friends with your fellow travelers over exquisite breakfast and sunset views. I've stayed in many "traveler" places around the world, but this is by far the one that I loved the most - worth every penny.

Room Tip: Stay at Bejo de flor for a perfect view!
