“Good hostel in my opinion”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

I stayed in Rio Hostel Ipanema from the 27th, of Sept until October the 2nd, 2013, where I slept in a private bedroom.
The bed was comfortable and the room was being cleaned every day.

I did not experience anything negative such as insects or loud hostel guests at night. The bathroom was clean. Maybe I was lucky that the other guests did not behave as swines, who knows, but I met some very friendly people, as well from the hostel as the guests. I would definitely take this hostel again if I go to Rio next time. The hostel provides you a good breakfast every morning from 8 tot 10 am (bread, fruit, coffee, tea) which I appreciated very so that I did not have to eat breakfast outside of the hostel every day.

The hostel is at a very good location in Ipanema. I experienced the location as very safe. I do advice people to learn some Portuguese sentences/words, but that applies to every country you visit. A walk to the beach from the hostel (Copa or Ipa) is not more than 15 minutes. There are a lot of cafeterias, juice bars, supermarkets and other shops nearby. The General Osorio Square is not even 10 minutes from the hostel, where you can take a bus to different areas.

In a nutshell: I can recommend this hostel

Room Tip: Depends, if you do not mind to sleep in a dorm, you can book a bed in a dorm. If not, the private ro...

The staff at Rio hostel went out of their way to advise me the best way to enjoy the rest of my time in Brazil with limited time and all the staff were really helpful with information about Rio. The breakfasts are great, alot of choice and there is a freshly made cake available in the morning made by the night security guard! Its really close to the beach, supermarkets and to the airport bus stop. I really recommend this hostel if you want a friendly and relaxed place to stay in Rio.

We really enjoyed Rio Hostel Ipanema. We booked the private double room for our first stay, and it was a really peaceful setting to rest and relax after our flight. Because it's a small hostel, you get to know all the faces after a day, and a lot of names after three days. We got to know the staff too, and enjoyed practising Portuguese with them. They were always happy to help out. Breakfast was the best! I liked the range of herbal teas, tropical fruits, French bread, cheese, jam, always a freshly-baked cake (it's a Brazilian thing, I gather). The terrace is lovely, but it has to close at 10pm because the neighbourhood is really residential. Easy walk to Ipanema beach, public transport is accessible. After travelling to other places, we chose to come back and stay in the shared dorm. It has 12 beds, but lockers are provided, and ventilation is good. I do think the weekend surcharge is a bit steep though. The price was BRS50 during the week and BRS65 on the weekend and public holidays (a bit irrelevant when you're an international traveller), which also coincides with the dorm being fuller, so you pay more, but enjoy it less because you have less space. On the whole I would recommend it highly. It has a great, warm vibe.

Staff: well meaning and one girl that had a lot of knowledge, but generally the staff was not very helpful or friendly, never volunteered helpful information just answered yes or no questions, gave us wrong bus numbers and directions for major landmarks in rio

Food: good breakfast with juice, fruit, bread, and ham/cheese

Rooms: dorm had three triple bunk beds with nowhere to put bags for nine people. WAY too crowded

Resources: not much info on what to do or how to get around for foreigners

Bathroom: ICE COLD SHOWERS, three showers for about 30 people in the hostel

Location: great spot, close to beach and restaurants

This is a small hostel and not a party hostel...exactly what I wanted. Easy place to make friends and perfect location. 5 minutes walk Ipanema beach and loads of tours available. Free breakfast on the terrace, which is a perfect way to start your day and local supermarkets near by or if you don't fancy cooking LOADS of restaurants. The staff are awesome and extremely helpful....

I stayed in this hostel for 3 nights in May 2012.

The location is incredible. It is a 5-10 minute walk (if not less) to Ipanema beach. There are many restaraunts and a few bars nearby. The hostel is also very close to Praça General Osorio, which is a very busy bus stop (buses can be seen all around the plaza) and includes a subway/metro stop.

I stayed in the 12-person dorms, which were quite decent and pretty clean.

The all-you-can-eat breakfast is incredible. They have a small panini grill which you can use to cook ham and cheese sandwiches. They also always include fresh fruit, juices and coffee.

The terrace is quite relaxing. It includes some couches, some books, and a few hammocks.

The only drawback for me was the price, though in general, hostel prices in Rio de Janeiro are a bit expensive.

A few tips:
*As it was my first time in Rio, I decided to use the hostel's transfer service, which cost 80 reals. That was a little pricey. I definitely recommend taking a taxi instead (or maybe the bus).

*I definitely recommend taking the transfer service to Ilha Grande. If you have 2-3 extra days, I definitely recommend staying overnight and seeing the island. It is one of my favorite spots in Brazil

I have been already three times in this hostel. It's in a perfect place, close to ipanema beach and copacabana. The staff is very friendly and helpful if there are any questions. Sometimes it was a bit hot in the bedrooms but now I they installed an air conditioner.
