I stayed at the surf n stay for 16 days and I loved every minute of it. It's located by some great and not very crowded beaches, the nearest one is just a five minute walk from the hostel. The atmosphere is amazing not at least thanks to the wonderful staff in the reception and the surf instructors. If you want a vacation or learn how to surf in a relaxed environment this is definitely the place to go, you have the essentials within walking distance but you don't get the feeling of being in a big city even though you're just a bus ride away from the center.

Unfortunately we got extremely sun burnt on our first day so we had to spend the remaining two days out of the sun which meant we couldn't go surfing and that said theres nothing else to do in Macumba area.

We were meant to camp but they had a problem with the rain and the grounds for camping but I would advise against camping as you have no privacy if you did.

As said in the title if your wanting a place to surf and chill then this really is the place. Staff are nice, breakfast is good and we stayed in the private red room with the fan which was very comfortable.

I would stay here again for the surf but expect the shops are a good 15 minute walk and those are very basic for food. Couple places to eat again about 15 minute walk that said you can order pizza to the hostel!

Overall i would recommend this place.

Positives: Excellent location for surfing, close to best and most consistent spots. Friendly staff, enthused about surf and super helpful, laid-back. Good breakfast and free wireless internet that worked nicely when I was there. Unbeatable price. Sunday morning was quiet and peaceful.

Negatives: One hour taxi ride from airports or south Rio (Ipanema, Lagoa, Gavea) where the fun and best night-life is. Location feels rather isolated. Horrible accommodations, worn-off broken doors and furniture, poorly kept and unclean room, baths, and common areas. I could not stay overnight and left, but if you are young and tired enough, it will do. Neighborhood felt unsafe particularly at night, nothing nearby, no restaurants or shops, only place to walk to is beach.

Room Tip: Except during June-August (Winter) get the room with air-conditioning. Bring insect repellant, Rio has dengue-fever transmitted by mosquitoes. Come mentally prepared for "camping" like and embrace the friendly staff and great surf which is what Surf N Stay is about!

From the minute we walked in we felt at home the staff were so friendly and accomodating, I think the friendly staff and atmosphere really make this place. The hostel is so close to many different beaches. It's about a 15 minute walk to the shopping centre, there are a few cafe/restaurant places just around the corner. If you want e chilled out atmosphere and don't mind too much about the luxuries this is perfect. The only thing that was a negative was the showers (temperature is either too hot or too cold) The town is about half hour sway from the city so once you have finished all your main touristy activities I would highly recommend coming here. The city is far too busy and crowded and honestly copacabana is very overrated. There's no room on the beach. If you are keen to chill out and surf then there is nowhere else better to stay. The instructors are proffessionals and excellent at what they do. Love this place!! It's perfect.

This hostel isnt located in "the Rio" that everyone thinks about - and thats why I loved it!! If you want to surf or just get away from the craziness of the city then this place is awesome. It's more of the "true Brazil" feel rather than the glitz & glam of Ipanema or Copacabana.
The guys in the hostel are brilliant and within my first hour of arriving we all jumped into the Combi van and they took us to one of the furthermost beaches and surfed and chilled for a few hours. When they didnt have surf classes another day they bundled us all up into the van again and dropped us off at one of the other beaches and then came back and picked us up 3 hrs later.
The hostel itself is located straight across from of of may surf beaches, so it's easy to check the waves and return for your board within 5 mins for a surf.
The rooms are spacious enough and aren't cramped but did get quite warm at night and I was attacked by mosquitoes - so try and get the beds near to the fan/ventilation.
Breakfast is your standard Brazilian style bread, cheese, ham, fruit, coffee, and cake - and there was plenty to go around.
The other travellers i met were brilliant and we had an awesome time. everyone had the same laid back attitude, whether they were a 'surfer' or not. They organised trips and tours for people who wanted it - note: the hang-gliding of Rio is closer to here than it is from the city and is highly recommended!
I came for 2 nights and stayed 6. I have been highly recommending already and will definitely be back when I go to Rio next.
Cheers for everything guys :)

Room Tip: Get a bed near the fan as the rooms can get quite hot and mosquitoes attacks!
