“Bed Bugs”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

This is a nice hostel with friendly staff. However when my wife and stayed they had an outbreak of bed bugs. My wife was bitten several times and came up in nasty red bruises. They moved her to a different and better dorm.

They took action the following day - spraying everywhere in the dorm and tumble drying everyone's clothes.

I thought this hostel was badly over-priced. We travelled the entire length and breadth of the continent and this was one of the most expensive hostels we stayed at.

Don't walk along the beach or beach road at night: there is a good chance of getting mugged.

Stayed here for a total of 10 nights , rooms cleaned everyday ,great friendly helpful staff , breakfast was adequate enough good strong coffee , no problem getting on the computers , only gripe was that they didnt have any hot water for 5 days in one of the buildings , value for money is faultless , gets a bit more expensive at the weekends but still v cheap as accommodation goes in ipanema , the managers should be v proud of there staff there , lowther Tatiana Danny and pedro all made it feel like a second home !!!!!!!!

We stayed at Che Lagarto in Copacabana for just over a week and booked a room with bathroom. Staff were very friendly and helpful, rooms were made up everyday and clean and the continental style buffet breakfast was a really good start to the day.

I would definitely stay here again and also when travelling to other countries in Latin America as they have many other branches.

Two thumbs up from Nick and Natasha, London, UK

We stayed here for a number of nights both in a 10bed dorm and a private room. The place is clean and well located. The staff were all replaced recently and while the new staff are keen and pleasant to deal with they are still learning and many mistakes are made. Bookings and payment records seem to be a problem. The security card system is a good idea, that needs work, it needs to be reactivated every time you leave the hostel for the day, but the machine is not always working, so you need staff to take you to your room. There were problems with the water and the internet connection almost every day we were there. The frosted windows in the dorm facing the street are semi-transparent and people can see through from the street. There is a party every night and it is good way to meet people, However if the music was turned down during the day it may be easier to communicate with the staff at reception. Breakfast was adequate if you could find a seat.

I had never stayed at a hostel before and I have to admit that I was impressed by this place. We stayed at the 6-bed dorm. Cleanliness was outstanding. Housekeeping actually cleaned the bathroom several times throughout the day.
The staff was really helpful, always giving insider tips to the city.
And location is great! Ipanema beach was 1 min walk, 5 min to Leblon shopping mall and half a block away from Rua Visconde de Morais, where you can take most buses to Sugarloaf, Corcovado, etc.
I definitely recommend this place.

The staff at che lagarto Ipanema are amazing! A lot of them are quite young but still try their best to get things done. They all speak at least Portuguese and some English and some staff speak 3-4 languages. They are so fun to go out and party with too! I made some good friends with a few staff members and went around the city with them-- so amazing!

The 10-bed dorm my friend and I were in the first couple of nights had crappy AC so we always had the window open too. Not a ton of circulation but humidity doesn't bother me so it's not much to complain about. Just smelled a bit bad. Shared bathroom was decent too. Shower temp was a set temp but just perfect for the weather!!

Breakfast is fine, same you get everywhere really. You eat in the common room/reception or out on the front patio which is nice.

The fact that the reception doubles as a bar in the evenings makes for some hectic late checkins but the staff so their best. Just a bit awkward.

Wifi always works in the main building but is choppy in the joint building across the street.

Rooms are generally a bit dirty despite the daily clean. I reckon it just gets a quick wipedown and that's about it. Always wear sandals in the shower!

Location is amazing, as its just a couple blocks to Ipanema beach! (Beach 10).

Oh and rooms on the Main Street are quite loud at night so if you can't sleep with noise maybe ask for a different room.

I just left the Che Lagarto this morning, and have no intention of staying there ever again. As far as the value goes, you pay for the security and the location, both of which are excellent. It is two blocks away from the beach, and is a good walking distance from many good restaurants in the area. However, everything else about the hostel was overall meh. They don't provide towels, which is highly inconvenient, considering you have to walk about a block or so to rent one. Our hot water didn't work, which is nothing short of hell for a room full of six girls. The staffholes who run the place were incredibly unfriendly and useless which is surprising, considering there seems to be a ton of employees there. One night my friends and I were hanging out and drinking in the lobby/bar area, when one of the lovely Che Lagartians just shut off the lights and left. When we left for our 6am flight this morning, they would only order us a cab no later than 3am, an obscenely early time that appeared to be most convenient for them even though the hostel is a 20 minute drive from the airport. The free breakfast is pretty good though, so there's that.
