“Great spot in this marvellous city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2012

Perfectly located in the heart of Ipanema, The Mango Tree is not your average hostel! Set in and around a traditional house retaining lots of original features, the common facilities are excellent; well equipped lounge/TV room, fully stocked kitchen, 3 communal PCs & a great outdoor (covered) dining area.
I stayed in an en-suite room at the rear of the site and, save for some unavoidable noise from the ongoing building work each day, it was a peaceful spot; a double bed, a big, clean room and modern bathroom facilities.
Breakfast was generous and varied. I did find the 10am deadline difficult to meet some mornings given all the nightlife Rio has to offer but there are loads of cheap alternatives nearby if you simply can't make it up in time!
In summary, don't let the term 'hostel' put you off if you're no longer a teenager. The place is smart, well located, 'well policed' by the management and frequented by a range of generations & nationailities. It's also good value in a very exclusive part of town!

Room Tip: The rooms at the rear of the site are smart & spacious. Just bring earplugs if the building work...

My boyfriend and I stayed here in mid-September for almost two weeks and remember this place as one of the highlights of our trip. Located a block away from Ipanema beach, this hostel is close to all the major avenues, restaurants, bars, shops and attractions in Ipanema. The staff were friendly and helpful and always available. The hostel is run by a couple from Australia who were around the majority of our trip and worked with us to arrange several activities and services when we couldn't speak the language or reach the organization by phone (e.g., a cooking class, hang gliding, surf lessons, taxiis and laundry service). Some of the highlights of the hostel included:

- free brazilian breakfast everyday (includes bread, cereal, a variety of fresh fruit, yogurt, cake (!), meats and cheese, juices, teas and coffee)
- lots of bathrooms so you never have to wait (located in all areas of the hostel and 3 of which are "private" but everyone can use); towels and shampoo/conditioner and soap provided when you check in; always had hot water when I took a shower
- in-house bar that's operated by the staff and open every night except Monday from 6pm-10pm - inexpensive drinks too!
- quiet, relaxed atmosphere (although the central bar area closes at 10pm, folks are welcome to hang out on the front porch until about midnight or later if they are not loud).
- diligent cleaning staff; bathrooms, rooms and common areas were frequently cleaned every day
- variety of guests - lots of folks from around the world who were easy to get to know and hang out with in the evenings
- safe; has a heavy security door where guests are buzzed in by the front desk and high walls with metal fencing and glass shards embedded in the lower wall areas (typical in Rio); well lit (with motion-sensor lights) and there were security cameras throughout the hostel. Small lockers are available to store your valuables (bring your own lock though) and private rooms can be locked securely. The front desked is manned 24 hours a day.
- comfortable TV room with books, DVDs and games you can borrow (just ask the front desk)
- free wi-fi in the bar area and internet/computers in the main building (which can be busy depending on when you go). However, we generally had no trouble getting a computer when we needed it.

My boyfriend and I did a lot of exploring around the city (sometimes based on recommendations from the staff) and it was nice to come back at the end of the day to a safe, quiet, clean place that was fun to hang out in. We got to stay in a great part of the city at a relatively low cost and learned a lot about Rio. Thank you to the staff of The Mango Tree for making our trip all that much better :)

Room Tip: The rooms in the annex or private rooms are generally nicer and further from the main open area (i.e...

I was here with my girl, in a double room with private bathroom, the hostel is good and there are a internal bar that open in the evening.
The guys of the staff are happy to give you information, and the room is cleaned every day, towels changed every two.
Excellent choice for visiting Rio and meet new people.

Nice hostel in a great area. staff were friendly and helpful and a lot of tours can be organised with the hostel directly. Rooms were basic, clean. Had a double room but had to share a bathroom. Breakfast only average. Very good option for a hostel in Rio

We stayed in a double room on two occasions, one time with ensuite and one time without. Staff is friendly and helpfull. Remember the adress and house number though, because on the outside there is no sign saying it's the mango tree. Breakfast is good, the area is safe, just a two minute walk from Ipanema beach. Other facilities are fine (clean bathrooms, enough spots to hang out and free wi-fi and computers for use). It's just a bit expensive, but Rio is expensive as a whole. Rooms are on the small side.

Room Tip: Choos a room in the back to get away from the street noise.

Fabulous location only 1 block from Ipanema beach. Stayed in a 6 bed dorm, comfortable beds-linen included, good breakfast, free wifi, friendly, helpful staff. Not a party hostel as the bar closes at 10pm and you have to leave the outside area, but that suited me fine

I stayed at the Mango Tree for one whole month. The hostel is located just 1 block far from the Ipanema beach.

The rooms are comfortable, wifi is available and is very efficient, breakfast is really great (with tropical fruits and juices!!!).

It is also located 4 blocks far from a metro station (General Osório) which runs efficient and quick metro lines to many areas of Rio including City Center and Copacabana. The hostel is just 20min taxi drive to the domestic airport (SDU), and about 45min taxi drive to the international airport (GIG).

I am recommending it to everyone. The price was great. The staff was very attentive, alert, friendly, quick and efficient.
