Over Christmas and New Year all hotels in Rio add a huge surcharge. Anything good was about £300 a night and anything pretty average was going to be £150 so when I found the Ok Hotel for £60 a night I thought I had booked us into a dump so I had zero expectations. The rooms are not big but I managed to get one of the few with a bath and my children's room had a small balcony. All rooms have good airconditioning, safe, excellent hairdryer, minibar and TV with CNN, BBC24 and quite a few channels showing movies and American Shows. The pool on the roof is very small but there are plenty of sun beds and tables up there plus a sauna. The hotel staff were absolutely fantastic - booking hang-gliding, calling up the football stadium and advising us on restaurants, calling taxis etc. There is a metro station just around the corner (if that entrance is closed another will be open a little further round) and it is five stops to Copocabanna or six to Ipanema. The hotel is near to many art galleries, museums, Cathedrals, churches and the tram to Santa Teressa. Breakfast was not great but I just had mango, pau pau and a roll.. You can pay a small fee to use their four computers.
