Everything in that hostel was so bad that I don't even know where to start.
Right, breakfast maybe:this place offers by far the worst breakfast that I've eaten in Brasil!! Just plain bread, with limited marmalade and coffee.
Being used to plenty of fruit at other hostels I had to go and get some myself from the shop. Just when I was about to prepare it in the kitchen, there comes the lady (I think she was an owner) telling me that I can't use the kitchen today and then she gave me the weirdest explanation, talking about some old and sick lady complaining. I really didn't get what was she on about. When I replied that I need to put some nutritions in my system and need to prepare the fruit, because breakfast here is just horrible, she then went on telling me how everything is so expensive in Rio (how unprofessional! ) and told me that if I want a better breakfast there are options, but I have to pay more, not that anyone had mentioned this earlier..
Couple of days later, even though my name was written on it, all my food, including tape wear was thrown out of the fridge, and staff just shrug their shoulders saying, they don't know where could it be (?!?)

Then comes the room. So, there was no water for the whole day! Again, thanks for mentioning in advance! When it finally came back, the toilet in my room broke. there was this constant sound of water running which was really annoying. I was then told that it will get fixed at 23.00 at night!!! At 23.30 someone came, switched off the water supply and we were then informed that we can't use the toilet that night. Not one word of apology.. The next day I demanded, they cut the price of the room...We got 20 Reals back.

The lockers have too little of a whole to fit a padlock in, I had to buy a new, tiny one..

The cockroaches became a normality, running under a table at breakfast, disgusting..

I was unlucky, that I was in Rio on a national bank holiday and everything was packed, so I had no choice, but to stay at Copinha. I was literally counting the days to get out of there. Everything just seemed to go wrong and there were complications after complications. It has definitely affected my stay in Rio, what a shame..

The only good thing that I can say about this place is the staff. There were really nice and spoke good English and Spanish. Other then that, my only advice to other travellers is to AVOID this place! For me it was the worst hostel I stayed at during my 3 months trip in South America

Hello Kasia G,

Thanks for posting a review for us on Trip Advisor, we are always looking forward to receiving feedback from our clients.

Copinha Hostel has just joined Trip Advisor, so we apologize for taking so long to answer.

No we are not a fancy hostel. We are just right for someone who needs a cheap and safe place to stay, but with comfortable facilities and a cozy environment.
We offer a free simple breakfast that can be enlarged by you! The kitchen is always available for you to become the master chef!
Unfortunately a kitchen staff person was missing and so the information given to you that day was not correct.

Please note that we have a very good cleaning staff. They attend to cleanin all of the rooms, bathrooms and common areas once a day, evert day, but its up to the guests to keep the rooms in a proper state.
Things break, we seek to repair. And on the cockroaches, as our house is on the street, many of them come from outside.

Copinha Hostel is very proud of its staff and members, isolated problems are to be expected in any place, but we are sorry you took such a bad image of us with you.

We apologize for all the inconvenience you had during your stay and from 2013, but now so much has changed!!
We would like to invite you to come back and check out our hostel now!

Kind Regards
Copinha Hostel

We stayed in a twin room with private bathroom. We are a couple travelling. We stayed for one night.

The Good:
Location is great
Staff are really friendly and helpful
Lots of activities/tours on offer
Good wifi (in reception area only)

the Bad:
Our room had mold all up the wall and it stank. The smell was not good.
Breakfast was terrible! (We just came from a hostel where breakie was really good for hostel standards) But this was a token gesture of breakfast (bread roll only!)
Room was noisy (we could hear the tv below us)
Bed was ok, but the pillow had a horrible plastic cover on it. Not sure what for.. Maybe to protect from the room's mold!!

I'm not sure what the dorms are like, they may be better. But Overall, from our experience, I would say that whilst its fairly cheap (for rio), it's not great. Rio is so expensive anyway and we've found it hard to get decent budget accom. On retrospect, we think we'd have been better off going for an apartment or cheap hotel.

OK, it´s THE Copacabana, and the hostel is nearby. Staff is nice. But that`s it for the positive things... I have been to Africa, India and other countries, but I never slept on such poor plastic matresses and pillows. Crappy breakfast. Rooms without windows, so very humid and dirty. But most important: the owner is outrageously rude. We booked seven nights and wanted to cancel two of them (but four days in advance!) - not possible. Then she said she will open the nights on booking.com, if someone books, we get back our money (part of it..). But we checked several times on booking.com and she never opened both nights - just lies. We paid for the room and left Rio for good.

Don´t book. Don´t do it. There is a three star hotel nearby charging only 50% more. And there are other Hostels near the beach.

Room Tip: Stay in Lapa, Botafogo or Ipanema Beach if you don´t want to stay at Copa every day. Or Santa Teresa...

The staff are all so bad, the owner is extremely rude, breakfast is very poor, dorm rooms are never cleaned, bathrooms are dirty and the hostel staff tell a lot of lies. They tried to charge us for a night we had cancelled a week before, and we had to argue with numerous members of staff to avoid this. Not as good a location as advertised - shouldn't really be classed as Copacabana. Nothing good to say about this place whatsoever.

Room Tip: Don't stay here!

Really, its hard to find a good staff these days, but we are always taking a close look to our employees and we make sure they are more then trust worthy!
We have great people working here now and we are so proud of them!

ABOUT BREAKFAST:
What does it include?
Coffee, Tea, Milk, Chocolate powder, powdered juice, bread, margarine, jam.
On weekends the breakfast is added with fruit option and hot dogs.
We understand it’s a simple breakfast…You are welcome to enlarge your meal, by going to one of the several food markets around the area, and use the kitchen!!

Our beautiful and quiet street is called: RUA FELIPE DE OLIVEIRA. We are located at number 11. In a cute and cozy yellow house. Google it!

The location speaks for itself! A 5 minute walk and your ate the beach, metro station, bus stops and any tipe of retaurant or food market!

Now, there have been some quite negative reviews about this place. Yes, there is an element of truth to them. The in-room facilities are quite old and worn, stairs creak and the mould could do with a bit of attention. Having said all of that, the people are lovely. The reception staff all speak very good English and are very knowledgable and will tell you the bus numbers to take to get around. The location is great for Sugarloaf Mtn, Christ the Redeemer and Copacabana. Ipanema is an hours walk away (or short bus). Remember, Rio is more expensive than the rest of Brazil so that is why you get less for your money.

We would like to thanks you for all the beautiful thing you said about our staff1 They are really great, and we take pride in that!

Copinha Hostel is situated inside a beatiful and historical house in Copacabana. A real Rio de Janeiro city treasure!
Unfortunatelly, since this is a historical house, it is a bit old and sometimes during high humidity season, the fungus can grow from one day to another, but we can assure you, maintenance is done in the rooms every day to make sure they are in proper living conditions.
We apologize for any inconvenience you may have had during your stay and from 2011 to now, so much has changed!!

Been there with my girlfriend. We were going to stay 4 nights. Payed in advance and all that, our biggest mistake.

First of all, the room they gave us was located almost inside the reception. A room for a couple with zero privacy.

Second of all, this is great: the room had no outside windows and the walls had FUNGUS all over it. It was hard even breathing there. The bed was also old and unconfortable.

The other rooms in the hostel were pretty much like this too. The place looks like it was very poorly improvised to be a hostel, but it has no conditions of being one.

It gets worse: the owner is an old lady who's hardly ever there. She comes by at afternoons, but not on weekends. We talked to her on a friday and asked for another room. She said she had none, and she could do nothing about "our" problem, so we started looking for another place to stay.

The next day we found one, and told the guy working there we were leaving. Since the place was obviously a complete mess and we had stayed only 2 days, we thought it was reasonable to ask for a 50% refund.

The guy said they don't do that. Yes I know hostels don't do that. But they had no conditions of even hosteling someone there. If we were to stay, they should at least provide us some breathing masks, please.

Anyway, he was only an employee there, so i wanted to talk to the owner. But she doesn't show up on weekends, so i kindly asked for a phone number that i could talk to her. Guess what: apparently she leaves no contact with them. That's HOW MUCH the owner cares about that place. In the end we decided it wasn't worth letting that ruin our trip and we just left the place.

Hi jvicjvic,

Thanks for posting a review for us on Trip Advisor, we are always looking foreward to recieving feedback from our clients.
Copinha Hostel has just joined Trip Advisor, so we apologize for taking so long to answer.

Yes its true, the double room near the recepcion, room B, is a little bad for privacy, bus must we remind you we are a youth hostel, and private rooms or privacy are not our main goal.
Hostels are a great place to meet new people and mingle, but sometimes travelers just need that extra peace. So we have this which is one of the many rooms near the reception.
We ofer these private rooms as a alternative for people who are little tired of staying in dorms for the whole trip and just need some alone time.
We have in total 4 private rooms for this purpose.

Copinha Hostel is situated inside a beatiful and historical house in Copacabana. A real Rio de Janeiro city treasure!
Unfortunatelly, since this is a historical house, it is a bit old and sometimes during high humidity season, the fungus can grow from one day to another, but we can assure you, maintenance is done in the rooms every day to make sure they are in proper living situation and we would never allow our gests to stay in any room that would make them feel less then confortable.
The city health inspection also says our establishment is more than suited for hosteling and under no circumstances should it be necessary for masks to be used.

Copinha Hostel is a solid and recognized company in our market. We have been here for over 15 years.
Nothing here is improvized, we plan everything and work hard to guarantee our costumer satisfaction.

The Hostel Owner does not need to attend to work every day, thats why she has employees and a manager. If you need anything, seek them too!

Refunds are always a delicate situation, no one liked to loose money, but in special situations they can and do happen!
We are sorry for how badly your situation was handled by the staff at the time, who is no longer with us!

We apologize for all of the previous inconveniences and we can assure you, the room is still in the same place, but we aren't!

From 2010 to now, so much has changed!!
We would like to invite you to come back and check out our hostel now!

Maybe change your mind about our staff and have some new opinions about on our work here!

Thanks Again
Kind Regards
