From reading the hotel promo ads, we were expecting a 5 star luxury property but it is not & is 'extremely' over priced & very over rated. It is a trendy, small hotel across the street from Ipanema Beach tightly built between 2 buildings & unfortunately it is the only newer hotel in the area so that's why we chose it. We had a deluxe oceanfront room with a balcony & it was ok but very narrow & dark with poor lighting. We had to call for housekeeping on 2 days because they didn't clean our room. The 2 main elevators were not working for 2 days so we used the service elevators. The rooftop pool is nice but very small with a great view & is used alot for private parties. The dining room/combined bar has long lines at night of young people trying to get in to party till 3AM so during the day the restaurant & furniture looks worn & unclean. The spa is very small & we enjoyed our massage. The gym is adequate but the staff were late to open it each morning. The concierges were very helpful & other staff were polite. The hotel just doesn't have the polished look, the little extra touches or amenities to make it a luxury property. There are nice shopping areas & cafes you can walk to behind the hotel along tree-lined streets which is much better than the 'concrete feel' of the Copacabana area. If you're looking for a real luxury property in Rio you will not find it to date. There are many older hotels that look worn & very average. The beaches could be cleaner & the waves are too wild & water too cold for the average swimmer. We saw all the sights & were a bit disappointed with Rio overall. We had some very nice dinners in different areas of the city but the traffic was awful getting there. Rio needs a major 'facelift' & much nicer hotels to be built on the waterfront. As world travelers, we feel there's so much potential for a truly luxurious experience in Rio but we didn't find it at the Fasano. It's a nice trendy hotel that is starting to show some wear & tear. We felt very 'ripped off' with the high rates we paid for what we got compared to some very luxurious hotels we've stayed at around the world. But at the moment, there's not much choice in Rio for a newer property, if that's what you are looking for. On a positive note, the shopping and food is very good in Rio.
