“"A Five-Star Wanna Be"”
Reviewed January 23, 2011

From reading the hotel promo ads, we were expecting a 5 star luxury property but it is not & is 'extremely' over priced & very over rated. It is a trendy, small hotel across the street from Ipanema Beach tightly built between 2 buildings & unfortunately it is the only newer hotel in the area so that's why we chose it. We had a deluxe oceanfront room with a balcony & it was ok but very narrow & dark with poor lighting. We had to call for housekeeping on 2 days because they didn't clean our room. The 2 main elevators were not working for 2 days so we used the service elevators. The rooftop pool is nice but very small with a great view & is used alot for private parties. The dining room/combined bar has long lines at night of young people trying to get in to party till 3AM so during the day the restaurant & furniture looks worn & unclean. The spa is very small & we enjoyed our massage. The gym is adequate but the staff were late to open it each morning. The concierges were very helpful & other staff were polite. The hotel just doesn't have the polished look, the little extra touches or amenities to make it a luxury property. There are nice shopping areas & cafes you can walk to behind the hotel along tree-lined streets which is much better than the 'concrete feel' of the Copacabana area. If you're looking for a real luxury property in Rio you will not find it to date. There are many older hotels that look worn & very average. The beaches could be cleaner & the waves are too wild & water too cold for the average swimmer. We saw all the sights & were a bit disappointed with Rio overall. We had some very nice dinners in different areas of the city but the traffic was awful getting there. Rio needs a major 'facelift' & much nicer hotels to be built on the waterfront. As world travelers, we feel there's so much potential for a truly luxurious experience in Rio but we didn't find it at the Fasano. It's a nice trendy hotel that is starting to show some wear & tear. We felt very 'ripped off' with the high rates we paid for what we got compared to some very luxurious hotels we've stayed at around the world. But at the moment, there's not much choice in Rio for a newer property, if that's what you are looking for. On a positive note, the shopping and food is very good in Rio.

Those that know Rio well generally agree that the nicest beachfront areas are, in order of exclusivity - Leblon, Ipanema then Copacabana. Leblon is largely top-end residential with no exceptional hotels, whereas Ipanema offers several, including the Fasano.

Here you will pay top-dollar for a balcony room as close to the ocean as they come. The rooms are smaller (narrower) than you might expect, but all-in-all, the accommodation is of high quality and the shower (there was no bath tub) was excellent. A DVD player was attached to the modern TV. Wi-Fi was available at USD 30 per day. Breakfast was a whopping USD 40! The price is softened when you discover that everywhere else in Brazil is expensive too...

The service levels were exceptional. Having booked a tour with a travel operator (not the hotel), and realizing that the tour details had been misrepresented to us, one of the lady receptionists made several calls to the operator, demanded to speak to the owner and managed to cancel the tour on our behalf with no costs incurred. She went way beyond expectations.

After 5 nights stay, we left the Fasano feeling very satisfied, although rather lighter in the pocket.

We traveled to Rio to celebrate and bring in the New Year. The Fasano is a cool hip place. The rooftop pool and bar was very welcoming. The staff was ready and eager to please. The restaurant was very enjoyable. They went out of their way to "create" a salad for me that was not on the menu. The rooms are on the small side, however, we were never in the room anyway. The gym could use up dating. It's very small. We celebrated New Years at the Copa..it was BREATHTAKING.

The Fasano is a beautiful design hotel in Ipanema overlooking the beach. The roof top pool was a big hit with the entire family and, although there were many trendy young jetset types drinking champagne by the side of the pool, my scruffy teenagers were made to feel welcome.

The Philippe Starck interiors are beautiful and organic. Local woods are featured as well as a few carefully chosen design icons, such as the ball chair. Great showers!

The Fasano al Mare was London quality and worth a visit. And not to be missed are the Apple Martinis in the Londra Bar.

I have traveled across 6 continents for work and pleasure and can honestly say, The Fasano is a one-of-a-kind special property. We went to Rio to celebrate my wife's 40th birthday. I wanted to create a memorable experience. I communicated with the Fasano guest relations manager over email and they had everything perfectly sorted - flowers in the room, reservations at restaurants, airport pickup and an upgraded room. The hotel is beautiful and perfectly located in Ipanema. The pool is fantastic as is the view. But the service is what stands out. Talented and caring hospitality experts who cater to your every need and care that you are having a great time. We felt at home the whole time. It's not cheap, nor is Rio...but we created a life-time memory and it was all worth it. I've stayed at the Fasano Sao Paulo for work and this matches that experience as well. This hotel company gets it right! I wish there were more of them! Unbelievalble!

I've stayed at many leading hotels. The Fasano Rio distinguishes itself for it's wonderful service - especially senior concierge Bruno, front desk attendant Raphael and customer service assistent Maria - as well as for it's stunning rooftop pool/lounge. Seeing Rio through the lens of the Fasano is well worth the price. You will be very happy.

Totally overpriced for the room and inroom amenities..service in restaurant was slow and inattentive despite a large staff. One day I complained three times to have room made up.
