Owner description: This is the first hill up on the way to Rio's famous Sugar Loaf. It offers it's own marvelous view from the top (215 meters) but its base is also a good place for hiking.

the place itself you cannot loose!
the bar itself can be the so called tourist trap!
my advice is:go to the sugar loaf.think about a tourist trap in your own city.they do exist and some are worthwhile for foreingners.

We loved climbing here, but make sure you check the schedule your going: at pm the sun is terrible at the north face (we went in winter and still the rock was unbearable!). You have a lot of sport routes, some multipitch. You can always take a beer at the top when you end climbing and then go down by train, straight to the beach!

The cable car ride up was our first and the views from Urca were amazing. A nice stop on the way to Sugarloaf

Urca is a neighborhood very safe in Rio since there is only one way in and one way out. There is a Brazilian Army base at the entrance which makes it very safe for residents of this area and visitors.
There is a trail that you can take to climb it to the top, just ask one of the residents to show you the way.
I loved the little bars near the water, where you can get a beer and Brazilian appetizers and bring to the beach. Beautiful sunsets.
Can be very crowded on the weekends.

This is one of those "have to go" places in Rio for all tourists. A spectacular view of Rio in every direction you look. Wonderful!
