Reviewed June 9, 2012

The house is funky with lots of nice design features. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful, lent us a hairdryer, booked taxis etc.

We stayed here for Christmas and New Year, a total of 19 nights, at a very very inflated price. Nevertheless we were looking forward to the experience as it was our first time in Rio and we wanted it to be special. From the website it looked great but in reality, there are parts of the building that are positively decaying.

For the first 5 nights that we were there, there were constant building works taking place where you had builders banging and drilling from 8am. Not a problem as we were early risers, but it was the fact that it went on literally all day so their claim that this is a peaceful place to relax didn't quite materialise for us. Zaba and Manu were perfectly pleasant to us until we complained about this, at which their attitude immediately changed and they would literally ignore us at the breakfast table and talk to the other guests instead. As people they are nice, as business owners, completely unprofessional. Because the noise was constant and we couldn't chill by the pool we decided to go to Paraty, a small island off Rio for 2 days. We spoke to Manu to see if there was some compromise he would come to in letting us off 1 night's stay and we'd pay for the other one. To be honest i understand that business is business and we were prepared to still pay for those nights if we had to as it may be hard to resell. He ended up telling us he thought we were using the noise as an excuse to get out of paying for our room and that he was disappointed in us.

Then they tried to get us to have dinner with them on Christmas and New Year's Eve stating that nowhere else would be open and we'd struggle to beat the price they were quoting (75 gbp per person, which we only paid a third of outdoors and plenty of places were open).

Our room was dark, basic and small. I don't want to just highlight all the bad things however, Ignacio the chef was wonderful to us and the breakfasts were amazing, on a par with, if not better than a 5 star hotel and his banana bread is to die for.

I am only writing this review now as i wanted time to ensure i wasn't writing a heated review at the time and being unfair to them, but to be honest I feel the same months on, and my partner feels the same way - which is saying something as he is the most laid back person in the world and nothing usually bothers him!

If you are backpackers just looking for a place to bunk down then this place is perfect, but if you are a couple looking to spend a bit of money and have a nice overall experience then i personally wouldn't recommend this place.

It was perfect! The house is a dream! Zaba and Manu made us feel like home. Ignacio and his delicious cakes are still in my mind. I went with my 6 years old son and he enjoyed the company of the two funny cats chuchu and Bart. Sandra took so much attention of with him, that it looks like as them knew it each other for long time. The RioGuide was a big help and the pool was cold and clean. In the end we even joined in a kids party in the house with brazillian music and ballons. Clean, beautiful and welcome, what a guest can ask more? We will be back for sure! A big hug for all.

A wonderful and welcoming place to stay with lovely people who look after you. We stayed in the garden suite for 4 days - which is a gigantic room overlooking the swimming pool and garden - a wonderful place to laze away hours reading in a hammock or paddling in the pool.

Breakfast was great - and Ignacio bakes wonderful homemade cakes every day. It was also a nice time to meet other people staying at the hotel and exchange tips on where to go etc.

Location wise - Saint Teresa isn't very far away from the beaches or the centre - a very quick/cheap taxi ride - and so we didn't feel we were missing out not being right on the seafront. It also has some great little bars nearby, and we ate out most nights up the hill. Initially, I was terrified of some reviews I had read about the location, and worried about walking home late at night as this hotel is located down a dark little road, but actually this never crossed my mind while staying here, and we walked that alley many many times very late at night without a care.

The price was very very reasonable for Rio - and I wouldn't hesitate in coming back to stay here again in the future.

Zaba, Manu and the staff were so friendly and helpful. VERY knowledgeable about where to go, and more importantly, how to get around. Any concern was responded to immediately. The view is incredible and the house has such a warm, friendly feel. We were lucky enough to be at the B&B for an afternoon of music with some wonderful musicians, by the pool one afternoon. Breakfasts were perfect; different fruits every day, a different freshly squeezed juice every day, a fresh breakfast cake each day, yogurt, granola, cheese, meats, bread, delicious coffee/tea...really, what more would you want. We loved sleeping with a fan and the windows open...such great sounds to fall asleep, along with a nice breeze. Lots a places to enjoy the property; hammocks, poolside, and tables on different terraces. Truly a sanctuary after a busy day in the city. It is easy to get just about anywhere from this B&B...even easier if you are up to hoofing it a little bit. I have to say, safety is an issue in ANY city if you travel. However, we did not feel unsafe or uncomfortable AT ALL. In other words, just be smart about what you are carrying, where you are carrying it, and how you are carrying it. Be aware of your surroundings. We walked around everywhere, and took subways at all hours without once feeling that our safety was threatened. If you stay in at night out of fear, you are missing a lot in this great city. Just stay on well-lighted streets is all.

Room Tip: We stayed in the garden suite...delightful. Any noise is from the surrounding mountainside...part o...

Very friendly welcoming place to stay and Manu & Zaba, the owners, and Ignacio the manager/chef were all very helpful & lovely. Excellent breakfast with good range of cake, bread, juice, fruit etc. served in a lovely large airy living room with a great view. We stayed in two rooms, the most expensive, the Garden Studio, which was great, light, spacious with its' own ensuite, quiet, private, with a wonderful view; and the cheapest, the West Room, which was dark, dingy & noisy. Both rooms had double beds, with a separate single in the Garden Studio, although a single bed could be added to the West Room it would have been a squeeze to fit it in.The bathrooms were fine & from what I saw the other bedrooms all looked nice, with balconies and views. Agree with one of the other reviews about the unsafe looking electrical sockets. We used the swimming pool every day & although small & lots of leaves in it we loved it - very pretty gardens. Santa Teresa is a great place to stay with lots of bohemian atmosphere & some some good bars restaurants & shops a few minutes walk from Casa Nova. We spent our last afternoon listening to great live jazz in a bar in Santa Teresa with a crowd of Brazilians & other tourists. It is also near to Lapa (for samba bars - but not safe to walk to/from late at night, get a taxi) but a bit of a way from Ipanema. Overall would definitely stay in the Vila CasaNova again.

Manu and Zaba the owners are great hosts, and it was a pleasure to meet them..very helpful.
Sadly the experience went downhill fast from there..

Issues :
1. Room not cleaned correctly on anyday we were there.
2. Bathroom left uncleaned 2 days in a row, with floortowel just turned to clean side instead of replaced.
3. Mould..lots of it, on the shower curtain.
4. Flying ant nest in light above bed, was made to feel like we were asking too much for the manager (ignacio) to remove them.
5. Breakfast was great....if you like bread and a piece of fruit every morning. A 95euro pousada should be catering better for guests than this.
6. Swimming pool was cleaned once in the 5 days we were there.
7. Cobwebs in every corner of the room.
8. Big broken floor tile caused me a cut foot thanks to it not being repaired.
9. Electrical sockets are plentyful, but most are hanging off the wall and you dont feel safe plugging anything in.

This accomodation is seriously lacking in investment and care and attention.

Other than the main lounge area and kitchen, the place is very run down and old.

Santa Teresa is a delightful area by day and gives you a nice insight into real Rio living...but but night there is no chance of walking downtown, so be warned.

Overall, Its a great shame because Vila Casa Nova has got so much potential to be a fantastic place to stay....sadly, thats all it has in this state, potential.

I hope the owners spend the money on it it needs to make it that place it once was...

Room Tip: We booked the Garden Studio (Studio Jardim), which was the most expensive..and it was aweful. One of...
