“Great hotel experience”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

I stayed at the Windsor for conference back in May, and I thought it was excellent. The room was in great condition, the hotel was a great meeting venue, and the food was excellent as well. The proximity to the beach was just icing on the cake.

Spent a few days here for a conference and it's well-equipped for that purpose. Conference room was spacious and the staff was organised. Lunch was the same all five days and was held in their regular buffet restaurant. But there is quite a bit of variety in the offerings, especially (and some might say, unfortunately) the desert table.

Rooms are nice enough for a hotel of this type. I like that there was a table to work at *and* a vanity table. The TV was set up more in the corner where it didn't take up as much room. Beds are pretty comfy. Bathroom was great. Lots of space, a toilet *and* bidet, and a large tub/shower with excellent water pressure. For some reason, housekeeping took our used face towels on the second day and we never saw replacements for the remainder of our trip. I would have complained but my curiosity got the better of me each day as I wondered if this would be the day we got some.

Location is away from the major tourist areas which is good in the sense that it's quieter and bad in the sense that there aren't many restaurants nearby. The beach across the road looked nice as did the rooftop pool area. Fitness centre was okay.

Major mark against them is internet access, which is odd considering they seem to be focused on being a conference hotel. It's R$40 per day per device. Worse, if you purchase in your room, you can't use it in the conference room and vice versa.

I waffled between "average" and "very good" and decided on the latter because we did enjoy ourselves during the stay.

Room Tip: If you need Internet access for more than one device, prepare to pay

I recently stayed at this property as part of a convention. I was very impressed with the cleanliness and appointment of the rooms, the clear presence of security personnel throughout the main lobby and convention area, and the quality of the food in the breakfast area. The proximity to the beach was most excellent, and though the water was quite cold, it was nice to take a walk on the beach and to look out over the area from the hotel's rooftop pool. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant, which was included in my room rate, was delicious. The wait staff was a bit slow bringing around coffee in the mornings, but I think that this was merely a function of the volume of people there due to the convention I was attending. Probably not the best hotel for tourists as the drives to Corcavado, Ipanema, and Copacabana were quite long.

Location:
The hotel is well located on a neighborhood called Barra de Tijuca, it is far from the city but in from of a great beach. If you are planning to enjoy Rio night this is not the hotel for you since the cab ride could take between 30 and 45 minutes. The trip to downtown is long and could cost between 60 and 90 R$ depending on the traffic. There are a few restaurants near the hotel 8 blocks to the south, so you better get a cab or car if you plan to go out dinner.
Grounds:
The hotel lobby is very nice, spacious and neat. The building in general has been well cared. I didn't saw anything out of place or worn. The hotel has a pool on the top floor with a great view.
Room:
I got a room on the 9th floor and a suit on the 13th floor the second time, the first facing the sea and the second facing the side street. The room was very nice and spacious in both occasions, but the beads could be better (I'm in love with the beads at Marriott Copacabana). You have a desk where you can connect to internet and some power sockets (bring several different adapters and make sure you have the 2 kinds of Brazilian standards). You have the usual over expensive minibar, and a nice 40'' LCD TV with the usual Brazilian channels and all movies with Portuguese audio.
The bathroom was very nice and well stocked with a set of shampoo, salt baths, etc of good quality. Also I got a hydro on the suite.
The laundry services is expensive in every hotel as usual, each shirt washed and passed cost 23 R$ (10 USD).
To summarize, I would say that the room was a 4 stars room in a 5 stars hotel.
Staff:
The staff was very nice and most of them speak Spanish and English.
Restaurant:
The breakfast is great, you have all the things you need for an international breakfast (eggs, sausage, bacon, waffles, cereals, omelets, etc) plus typical Brazilian fruits and some pastry and breads. I had dinner on the hotel room almost every night and you better ask for the meal before 11 PM or the menu gets reduced to 2 main courses. The food was good but not great and maybe a bit expensive. I had lunch on the restaurant during 2 weeks, they have a big buffet for 100 R$ with a lot of good quality food, the only thing I could say is that they should change the options more often since it gets a bit boring to eat almost the same every day.
Internet connection:
As usual, the hotel charge you a lot for the internet connection (36 R$ for the whole day) and the speed wasn't good enough (I couldn't have a decent Skype video conference). I believe that in a 5 stars hotel you should get internet connection for free since you are already paying a lot for the room. Today you have free internet in several places (restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc), why they still are trying to charge you more for something that should be already be included in the rate... that is something I would never understand.

Finally, I believe that if I had to come back to Rio on vacations (I stayed here for business), I wouldn't stay in this hotel again for 2 reasons: location (it is very far from Rio) and expensive (if you have to eat in the hotel is very expensive)

Dear Mr. S Marquez,

We would like to thank you for the preference given to our hotel and especially for bringing to our attention important impressions regarding your visit.

Through comments like yours, we seek to enhance and suit all needs, in order to always provide a great stay for our guests.

We are very happy about the quality of our breakfast and food in general. We deeply regret about the options of our buffet, your requirement was sent to our chef to improve it, we really thank you for your report.

Regarding gratuity in wi-fi, because even the high quality requirement imposed by the service users, whether guests or participants of events, it was not possible extinction of the payment. However, we are doing some studies so that we can reduce maintenance costs with our providers. Very soon we will have news about that.

Barra da Tijuca is also surrounded by tourist attractions and paradisiacal beaches, also already has established itself as the region with the highest concentration of shopping malls and business. Hopefully the next opportunity you have the privilege of exploring the area and our natural beauty.

We reiterate our thanks for your valuable collaboration.

Kind Regards,

Marcos Bezerra

Very good hotel, but everything is outrageously expensive. I only stayed there because of a meeting held at its conference center. And the location is also not a plus point (away from most of the city’s highlights), unless you plan to visit the highly recommended south most beaches.

This hotel is located right across from the beach which is great. The hotel itself is more of business hotel. The lobby bar is small and closes early. it was definitely clean and safe. The elevators seemed slow so give yourself time to get to the lobby if you have a car waiting or are catching a shuttle that wont wait for you! Most of the employees can speak and understand English which helped alot!

Very helpful staff and a lot of english speakers so navigating the hotel and getting what I needed was never an issue. Nice bar on ground floor and up by the rooftop pool. So close to great parts of the beach. I love staying here and now that they have an atm machine that gives a good rate on exchange it is even better. The rooms are good size, they have fridges and food stocked and ready for your arrival. A nice spot that can be a bit pricey but after staying in some real dives in Brazil you definitely get what you pay for here.

Room Tip: The views of the beach are incredible but if you get a view of the mountain behind it is still nice.
