Spent the best part of half a day on logistics but ended up spending only half an hour at the statue itself. It's one of those places that you feel compelled to visit whilst in Rio, what with it being listed as one of the wonders of the modern world. It was for this reason alone that I visited this place and was quite disappointed by the whole experience. Firstly, the cog train. Book in advance or you might end up waiting for several hours for a seat. Long queues for return trip. The 20 minute journey to the top is no great shakes either. If you find yourself waiting for the train visit the beautiful church across the street. Better to go up to the statue in the vans as the queues are shorter for these. Once you get to the top there are more queues for the lifts up to the statue or you can take the several flights of stairs to the top. You will be one of hundreds of people taking photos of the statue and the fantastic scenes of Rio and the surrounding islands. The views are fine but the statue itself is underwhelming. But it's a place you have to go whilst in Rio, just to tick that box. So go but try to go very early in the day to avoid the crowds.
