We booked a half day tour which included the Christ redemer, I was a bit concerned it would be very busy as it had rained for 5 mornings previously and the day we went was sunny and we didn't get there until 10am. Luckily our tour was by mini van which took us almost to the top and then we only had a 5min wait to get the official minibuses. At the top the views were amazing. It was fairly crowded but not too bad. The only annoyance was people doing the Christ pose on the small staircase making it difficult for people to pass. One Japanese guy spent about 10mins performing every pose possible on stairs that were narrow for the amount of people up there. Also , why so people bring their big tablets ans decide to make panorama photos knocking into people as they spin around. It doesn't look clever.
From what our guide said it was quieter in march and also there were no cruises that morning. Arrive there when there is a cruise in town and your screwed, 3000 people turn up all wanting to see Christ redemer. Also the train is a lot slower although perhaps a more attractive way of reaching the top than in a minibus.
