Very well set-up tour, shows a little bit of how H STERN works (from getting the stones here in Brazil, to designing the jewelry and setting the pieces) at the end they try to sell their worldwide famous designs (something between a $500-$100.000) but its done gracefully: not pushy at all and definitely tempting!

Unless you're the kind of tourist who is looking for quartz parrots, don't bother coming here.

An ipod guided tour leads you through the factory where people are designing, cutting, polishing, and setting gemstones. It is a well done tour, but went a bit fast for my kids, as they wanted to hover more. Then you are led to a shop where you can buy things if you wish. Good gift shop, very nice people in each area to help you and tell you more about the pieces. My daughter got to show off her rock collection to a kind employee there, and she enjoyed all the sparkly gems. We learned a lot and enjoyed our trip there.

While the 15 minute "guided tour" through the "museum" is somewhat interesting and informative, it is really nothing more than a front for the store. Once done with the tour you are taken to a very high pressure sales environment (ever buy a car?). It seems that you can probably get good deals here (world headquarters, no tax for foreigners) but if you are not interested in buying say 'no' quickly and firmly. Note--they will pay for your cab ride back to your hotel so you could actually go on the quick tour just to get a free ride.

H. Stern is a major international jeweler -- but there's more. They are located all over Brazil, but Ipanema is their international headquarters. They will send free transportation to your hotel in Copacabana,, a good way to get to Ipanema. The Museum not along educates you about the gems of Brazil, you will see actual jewelry being made. Of course, you will have the opportunity to see and try some on. There is not a hard sell, neither is there negotiating. It is a Brazilian experience, and you will see their outlets in major sites and hotels, but not much of their gem collection. If you are interested in fine jewelry with an ethnic twist, there are some pieces depicting Afro-Brazilian figures and Native-inspired themes.
