We went to the Sambrodome to see what must be the best Carnival show on earth. The Brazilians are experts when it comes to having fun and making a sexy show. Unfortunately, they are not so concerned about how you get there and the facilites at the show. We took a taxi (because the bus that we had paid $150 for didn't turn up (that is Brazil for you). The taxi couldn't drop us off by the main entrance, but inside a tunnel nearby. Then you have to walk for 15 min. in the slums to get to the main gate. Anywhere in the world they would have constructed a platform for taxis (in Brazil they can't think that far). Inside the Sambrodome you sit on concrete bench, if you have booked the cheap tickets (that is about $200). In this so-called "cheap" area the toilets don't work. Imagine 1000 people using toitlets that don't work in 30c - it stinks! When we left it was impossible to get a taxi (remember Brazilians don't think). So we had to walk in the slums to find the nearest Metro station. It is a great shame that a great show can turn into such and unpleasent experience!

Good: lots of locals in section 13, security let us in with food and drinks, booklet had all the song lyrics

Bad: can't see much detail since you are so far from parade, you have to walk over people to get to toilet since its pooorly designed. Beers sold are mini cans.

Suggestion: dont go in. Instead there is a free tightwad hill that looks over section 11. You can hear and see the parade. And what's even more fun than being inside is sitting at the end of parade with family members of samba dancers at the street the vender stands. That money you would have wasted on a ticker will go really far by spending it on beers and food at the outside... And you'll see the costumes and people up close and in person. Also you can see the dancers and floats getting ready and setting up right outside of the central metro station.

Free itinerary:
1. Go to central station and watch the dances dress and see the floats being tested out. Its front row seats baby!
2. Walk to behind section 11 on tight wad hill, watch parade and hear the music
3. Walk down to end of parade and see all the dancers exiting. They will take pic with you and let u stand on the floats!!
4. Have a cheap beer and food from street venders.

Just in from Sambodromo in Rio....what an awesome experience. We watched from a camarota which was similar to a large suite for 200 or so....price included food, drinks, and a/c interior and then an area next to the procession of samba schools. The samba schools and their floats, costumes, etc were truly a sight to behold with lots of energy but when we go again we won't choose this set-up as the pricing vs. value does not make sense for us. The cost per person was $ 1000 USD and one would think that food and beverages would be over the top....on contrary both were mediocre - paella and pasta with low-end beer (Tijuca?) and cava....the company was Groupo Pacifica. The suite was well laid out with sitting areas, a/c, flat screens, etc and wait staff was excellent - but food and bees detracted what could have been a five star + event...

We briefly visited this place with our guide since we were not in Rio during Carnival -- this gave a small glimpse into what it's all about. The Sambodrome is a large set of bleachers from which all the parades take place, and you can see the small museum which shows videos of the parades and also allows you and your family to try on some of the costumes for photos. Not an all day visit, but good for 45 minutes - hour or so...

*I joined this tour via El Misti Hostel. This included Christ the Redeemer, Santa Teresa, Sambodrome, Escadaria Selaron, Pao De Acuca. The price was 150Reals on Jan 8th, 2013*

One gets to see THE place to be during Carnaval. The seats don't look much of importance but one needs to understand that all of Rio WANT to be here during the festivities. The famous arch is where the stage is. The design is inspired from a woman's bum when sunbathing from behind. Very Brazilian indeed.

I spent 5Reals to wear a full on Carnaval outfit. Yes, very touristy, yet, a dream of mine since I don't think I'll ever get to experience Carnaval here. Surprisingly, the costume is not that heavy. As for my photo, i hope most don't get me mistaken to be in Vegas.
