We enjoyed our night. It is in a really quirky setting which was half the fun. And when we had enough of the bands, noise, food and dancing, we wandered through the different rooms and found ourselves in another area with a small musical group of 3 musicians playing gentle music which was most enjoyable.

A great live music club in the heart of old Lapa quarter. We were there on a Friday night around 10:30 pm and had no problems to get it. Just, don't forget an ID with a picture on it. They are very strict. I used my health insurance card. As long as the card look somehow official, they are fine with it. Entrance is now 35 real and you have to pay, when you leave. Don't throw the bill away, after you pay at the cashier. They check again at the exit.
The club is a real experience. On three levels and in two buildings they are playing live and club music, mostly Samba. Guests are a mix of carioca's and visitors from other parts of Brazil. The service is excellent and very friendly. The food is good and the prices not too expensive. So, what do you want more from a perfect evening in Rio?

Do go!
It's a must in Rio: tourists, Brazilians, young and old, dancing and non-dancing, covers and original music.
The group I heard was excellent. My only regret was that I couldn't find someone to sell me their CD

I love this place and I have visited Rio Scenarium many times.

It is important to understand that there really are what I would describe as two Rio Scenarium's. During the week and early evening, it is a beautiful restaurant that offers live Samba. However, there are three floors and divided sections. The areas facing the stage and live band are limited, so if that is important for you make sure to make advance reservations or get there early to not be disappointed.

In one of the reviews I read it says that some people dance, while many stand around - well, that is true, but keep in mind that the type of Samba that is being played is not exactly easy to dance to. It takes practice or lessons to keep up with some of the dancers. Believe it or not, but not every Brazilian knows how to dance Samba :-) The Samba that couples dance is a beautiful form of art and movement, not everyone has that vibe. Probably the closest comparison is dancing Salsa. If you are lucky you will see a couple dancing that truly knows how to dance Samba and your first instinct will be to stand and watch (Then wishing you could dance like that)!

On the weekend, specifically Friday and Saturday night, it becomes the second Rio Scenarium - the nightclub. While the restaurant and Samba music continue on the first floor, the nightclub on the second floor gets going after midnight. On Saturday night you better be there by 10 or 11, otherwise expect lines stretching down the street and waits more than one hour. By midnight the nightclub on the second floors gets going - with all Brazilian popular music that is quite agreeable to almost everyone.

Why do I love this place so much? Not many nightclubs cater to all ages like Rio Scenarium. Even on a Saturday night you will find people of all ages, not just teenagers or people in the early twenties (even so that is more common on the second floor). I am in my 40's and feel completely at ease and comfortable.....the music and ambience is agreeable to me, I can't say the same for clubs in my hometown of Miami.

Even if you go just for dinner, try to get a table in a section close to the stage. You will be amazed.....great talent, great music, and wonderful surroundings.

Also as a side note - for evenings be prepared to bring ID. A Drivers license is fine - as it gets late and Rio Scenarium turns into a nightclub, they must ask for ID. This is common in ALL nightclubs in Rio. During the early evening this is not required.

You will be given a consumption card - guard this with your life! This is where all your drinks and food are marked, which is paid upon leaving at the designated cashier. Again, this is very common in Brazil. If you lose the card, you will be charged an excessive minimum consumption fee - DON'T lose the card :-). Pay attention to which cashier can accept credit cards and/or cash depending on your payment method.

To call the Scenarium a bar is to grossly underestimate it. The Scenarium is an attraction in its own right, with amazing music, good food and drink, fabulous service, and of course the one of a kind setting.

We visited with a group of about twenty friends and while at first we were taken aback by the twenty dollar cover fee (us dollars), we soon realized that it was worth every penny. The music was great for dancing or just listening to, and the service was very attentive without being intrusive. The building is three stories with several rooms on each floor, each room has a collection of different objects and decorations that give it a quirky, eclectic vibe. The center of each floo opens up to a balcony so that visitors can look down to the basement and see the band and dancers. It was worth every dollar and was a very memorable experience while in Rio.
