I stayed for 3 weeks in Vidigal House and I can tell you now it's the most amazing place to be in Rio. You get the real Brazil experience by meeting heaps more locals through Bruno and Fernanda. Even though Vidigal is a Favela I felt 100 times safer here than anywhere else in Rio and anyone else who has stayed here can tell you the same.

A great breakfast is provided and laundry services for a small fee. If you don't mind being a room with 8 others which I didn't then it is perfect. You have Wi-fi and TV with cable channels so you can watch some English speaking programmes.

I can't recommend enough to stay with Bruno and Fernanda who are so friendly and hospitable. After my long flight to Rio Bruno ordered me food which was so lovely.
If you are planning a trip to Rio stay here for at least a week to get a real buzz for Vidigal.

I stayed at VidigalHouse for the month of May and cannot think of much to fault here.

I was in two minds about whether to post this review, as I feel like it is currently one of the best kept accommodation secrets in the world and kind of wanted to keep it to myself. As a travel agent I am always on the look out for brilliant properties for clients though and felt like I couldn't keep this place to myself.

The owners, Bruno and Fernanda, are welcoming, warm and friendly from the moment you step inside till the moment you leave.

The hostel has two separate rooms to stay in - one room has 3 x 3 bunks and the second room has 1 x 3 bunk. Both rooms are air conditioned and you are provided with bedding on your arrival. You also receive a locker and key, so there is no need to worry about bringing your own lock.

There is an upper balcony with tables, chairs, a bathroom and a brilliant view that is open from 8.30am till 10pm, but once this closes there is a small balcony downstairs just off the living room and kitchen which is adequate to sit and relax on or watch a beautiful sunrise if you're an early riser as I was for my first week or so.

I have always stayed in 5 star hotels when travelling so I was quite nervous about the prospect of staying in a 'hostel' so was pleasantly surprised at just how immaculate this hostel is kept. It seemed that every time I looked around one of the owners was sweeping, emptying bins and wiping down tables.

This hostel mostly holds long term stayers, and while I was there it was all people doing volunteer work which meant that there was an added sense of security, safety and family.

If you are just going to Rio to smash a bucket list out over the course of two days this probably isn't the best property for you - you may as well stay somewhere like Copa so you have easy access to everything. Instead VidigalHouse and Vidigal is ideal for people that want to experience the real culture and lifestyle of Rio. A local supermarket, pizzaria and sushi bar make life easier still.

A simple breakfast is included each morning, which is always a great start to the morning. There is also a decent wifi connection, a hot shower, a tv with full cable access, a laundry service at a reasonable price (or if you prefer, a clothes maiden on the balcony so you can do your own hand washing), and Bruno's mum cooks up a Brazilian style lunch or dinner at a reasonable cost if you wish to have a quiet night in watching tv.

One important thing to note is that this hostel has stairs ahoy and the community of Vidigal is full of hills and stairs so it's not for the lazy, injured or weak kneed. However, if you're a thrill seeker then jump on a motor taxi at the bottom of Vidigal and get driven up. Might be worth asking someone for hints on how to direct the driver though as it's rare that any of them speak English.

Room Tip: Pay the little bit extra for the 3 bunk room. I stayed in both throughout my stay and definitely found that the 3 bunk room provided me with more privacy and a better nights sleep. Also, when picking your bunk - if you feel the cold then stay away from the top bunks, as the air con makes them much colder than the others.

If you want a more authentic Brazilian experience then Vidigal is definitely the best place to stay in Rio. This hostel was the perfect place to live for 5 weeks; it felt more like a second home than an actual hostel. It is spacious, clean and has really good facilities including wifi, a TV with cable channels, laundry services and a computer. The living room and balcony (with amazing views of Leblon and Ipenema beaches) are great places to socialise and eat dinner, and you have the choice of ordering a home cooked lunch or dinner for a really reasonable price which I definitely recommend! Breakfast is also provided every morning, included in the price of the room. The beds are comfortable and both rooms have air conditioning. Bruno and Fernanda, who run the hostel, were amazing and made me feel really at home, you can go to them with any queries about life in Rio. The favela itself has a great atmosphere and plenty of bars, restaurants and supermarkets so you're never far from anywhere and only have to make a short walk to the bottom to catch a bus or taxi to other areas of the city. It doesn't take long to feel safe and at home there.

A great place to stay in Rio. Vidigal is one of the safest places you can stay in Rio and it's super close to everywhere you'll need to go: Copacabana, Ipanema, Sao Conrado etc...

The hostel has great facilities, far more than I expected, TV, Wifi, laundry services and breakfast is provided for free (It's delicious). There's also a balcony with a beautiful view of Leblon/Ipanema beach. It's also only a 5 minute walk to the supermarket.

The couple who run the hostel are two of the friendliest people I've ever met. They are helpful and really make you feel at home. They also speak good English. They regularly have barbecues which are super fun and serve some delicious cocktails!

Room Tip: The larger room is slightly cheaper, if you want more privacy it's worth paying a bit more for the smaller room.

If it's your first time staying in a hostel then you would definitely want to stay here! Fernanda and Bruno are awesome hosts and will provide you with everything you need. The breakfast is served every morning and there are occasional barbecues which are great fun! The rooftop has some of the most amazing views of the beaches and the rest of the favela-you won't be disappointed. Vidigal also has a range of great places to eat and you'll always find something to do! Best of all the hostel is near a quiet beach and not too far from Copa and Ipanema. Will definitely be back next year, thank you guys!
