Hercus Lapa Hostel
Reviewed February 25, 2013

I had my reservations about this hostel after reading the comment left on this site. But now it just baffles me! I stayed in Hercus for 2 weeks, and its was class. We had come from a hostel with no air conditioning so to find our rooms with the fresh cool air was a plus from the off. The staff were unbelievable from day one and I became great friends with all of them during my stay, not speaking portuguese wasn´t a hinderence, as they spoke English very well. Ok so you get to Lapa and it can seem a little strange, but Lapa is where the night is, full of bars with live Samba bars and some of the most famous clubs and bars in Brazil. For me the location was perfect, a 10 minute minibus from the famous beaches and a ten minute walk to the more beautiful flamengo and botafogo beaches (in my opinion....although the water is not quite as clean) then at night you have the lively Lapa a few minutes walk away. trust me...with the Caipirinhas they have out here (lethal) you do not want to be travelling far on your way home! The hostel was clean, cheap and friendly. They helped organise parties and we would all go together, the place was all in all quality! my memories of Rio will stay with me forever!

this without doubt is the worst place anywhere i have stayed.as soon as arriving you notice the area is not the best part of rio and after a few days here you realise that.you have a dropout hostel 2 doors away with drunks and drug addicts staying there and 20 yards the other way is full of prostitutes and all kinds of gangs so safe it is not.
the hostel and its staff are the terrible, when staying there, the temperature was in the 40,s but there are no fans apart from in the rooms so the whole hostel was like a sauna.there was never much water to wash and shower and when it was off the toilets stank but not one member of staff was bothered about it and just left it for days, the stench running through the entire place.
breakfast was included but was never worth it and on christmas day they managed to get it down to 1 black mouldy banana, awful!
then the staff!i have never met so rude and unhelpful people in any walk of life!when arriving in rio for the first time you would expexct a map and to be able to ask directions to places.no such help at this hostel, they could not even tell you how to get to copacabana beach on the bus, even though it stopped outside the hostel!as i was english, the entire staff(apart from the lad who worked nights) refused to communicate with me at all saying they did not understand me,totally rude and amazing as after leaving the hostel i never had any such problems with anyone else.
then on leaving at checkout, the girl then tried to fleece me for an extra nights stay, luckily i had my booking in my pocket and when producing it to her,her face dropped to the floor!it was the first time she had spoke to me in 2 weeks of staying there and it was to rob me of another 45 reias, incredible!this place needs to be shut down and the unhelpful staff who worked there traine don how to deal with people instead of spending all day on the computers chatting to their friends! avoid it please,it horrid
