Rio Nature Comfort Hostel
Reviewed April 23, 2014 via mobile

A very nice big hostel, the only negative was that they didn't have air-condition, and when you have the door/window open to get a little air, the mosquitos eat you up. But everything else was very good! Good service, nice facilities. Shared bathrooms were actually surprisingly clean.

This is a decent neighborhood - felt safe and we walked down the hill to the grocery store just fine. It's by Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer) and close to bus stations to the beaches. The property, however, is pretty dumpy. I have traveled extensively and this is one of the most bland hostels I've stayed in. Rooms were VERY basic... the first room they tried to give us had no bed and just a mattress on the floor... but they offered to give us a different room, which I of course accepted. The room was okay, but the fitted sheet was so small it came off every night while sleeping. The worst feature by far was the lack of air conditioning. It was over 90 F every day and humid, and made sleeping at night very difficult.

Overall, a decent place to stay if you're on a budget, but I've been to much nicer hostels all over the world. Staff was fine.

Not a bad place to stay. The location is a little of the way but you can get a bus just outside or even walk 20mins to the closest restaurants and shops etc. rooms are fairly small but bathrooms and showers are huge with nice hot powerful water. Hammocks and a balcony on the higher floor with a view of Christ the redeemer. Staff helpful and friendly. Breakfast is ham and cheese toasties, fairly standard of hostel in Brazil.

I stayed here during Carnaval, and while it was away from the action, with a little effort we were there in no time. The staff liked to party with the guests, and we all had a great time together. The dorms were okay, clean, with lockers, and large bathrooms. But it was unbelievably hot, and the fans could only do so much to keep us cool. In fact, there were a few people who dragged their mattresses up to the top floor, which was open-air, and slept there. The showers didn't drain when I was there, but maybe that's fixed. And the internet was spotty at best. It's in a good location - I think only one guest got robbed on our street. There's a bus that stops in front of the hostel, and from there you can get anywhere, although a cab is a better option if there are multiple people. Screen the cab driver first - we rode in a cab with a one-eyed driver who was half asleep during the drive there. Overall a pretty good place for the money.

Average hostel, really great staff, mostly mediocre is every way. It's a bit far from the action, which is good and bad. it makes it quiet nice to relax in. A good view and facilities but a steep climb up if you don't use the buses.

My four friends and I stayed at the Rio Nature Comfort Hostel during Carnaval weekend in 2013. We paid $100 USD per person per night to stay in a 8-person mixed dorm, which we were expecting during high season. However, we had a hostel experience that I wouldn't pay a penny for.

All of us have travelled the world extensively, and the Rio Nature Comfort was unanimously the worst hostel we have ever stayed at. Why?
- We had made our original reservation online in November and thought we were confirmed. We had asked for a private, air-conditioned room. Upon calling the hostel in mid-January, they had absolutely no record of our reservation and we had to re-book, which was a major nuisance.
- The rooms were boiling hot (no A/C) and we were up at 8-9AM every morning. It was so hot that several hostel guests moved their mattresses to the roof as it was cooler to sleep there.
- The rooms were dirty and there were ants crawling over several of the mattresses.
- Beds were cardboard-thin and extremely uncomfortable.
- The Rio Nature Comfort has issues with running water. One morning there was no running water at all and we could not shower, go to the bathroom, or use the sink. When there was running water it was freezing cold.
- The bathrooms were very poorly maintained. By mid-morning, there would be water all over the floors and no toilet paper. One of the bathroom's sinks was jammed with shaved hair one morning.
- The Wi-Fi internet we were promised did not work for the majority of the time we were there.

On the positive side, the hostel was centrally located to beaches and attractions but was on a quiet street. The staff was accommodating and friendly.

To sum it up, if you'd like to live in absolute squalor during your next visit to Rio, stay at the Rio Nature Comfort.
