My advice would be to take a walking tour up the steps and to the final tram stop, then take the tram down. Or take an uber up and tram down. The ride down is free! The ride up is 20 Reals (for tourists).

The tram goes over LAPA bridge. There isn't much to do in Santa Teresa and of course take care.

This tram was reintroduced 2 yrs ago after the tragic accident that happened in 2011. The tram starts from Lapa and ends in Santa Teresa. The ticket costs 20 R$ which is quite expensive but the ride is quite enjoyable during a sunny day. There are lots of bars and restaurants in Santa Teresa but also thefts so please try to be careful where you keep your valuables. And try not to walk too much because it's not safe, even local guides were robbed not only tourists.

Good to see that after accidents in the past, this is running again. Not the quickest or most frequent transport service to and from the Centro, but by far the most fun. Santa Teresa is well worth a couple of hours, if not days, to explore.

We ate lunch in Santa Teresa and then caught the tram to Lapa.
The team has only basic safety features but provided an enjoyable trip across the the Lapa Arches (former aqueduct).

It seemed to stop randomly for residents.

Hold on to your belongings and young children as the safety features are basic.

The trolley car to/from Santa Teresa is back, but in order to provide the free service the residents demanded for themselves, tourists must pay R$20. The new trams are lovely to look at, expensive to ride. Cab drivers are often reluctant to drive to Santa Teresa, from the Cristo Redentor side it can be dangerous, the downtown side is steep and follows a cobblestone road which can be hard on vehicles. Once you are in Santa Teresa however, you will be glad you visited. Old Rio neighborhood, good restaurants and artsy type shops, and a few degrees cooler during the Summer months. Fun to wander and enjoy the architecture and shops. My "three star" rating is for the Tram itself and the fact the cost is absurdly high. Santa Teresa itself merits 5 stars.
