Owner description: A hippie hangout in the 1960s, this Sunday market in Ipanema is an entertaining place to browse for arts and crafts, as well as to people watch (at Praca General Osario, 8am-6pm, Sundays).

Nice market. Very relaxed. The combination of local food, arts and craft and of course also some type of tourist trap but without the backlash ;)
Been there a few times by now and can spend some hours there wandering around and stopping for food and drinks on the corners of the square.

The hippie market in Ipanema is a traditional place to be visited.

Only one block from the beach, and taking place only on Sundays, the artisans, sculptors and painters sell their creations to all those who enjoy alternative and handmade products.

One precious tip: if you have a local friend in Rio, ask him to negotiate prices for you.

It is very normal to discover many different prices to the same item, according to the language used by the potential buyer.

I have been in so many markets in so many countries, what on eath I could be excited about? well, I was wrong. The quality and divercity was such, that instead of half an hour we expected to spend, we been there for 2.5 hours. Even my husband liked it, and for him this is the almost impossible thing about shopping.

The Hippie market is a great way to spend a Sunday while in Rio. The first thing is to walk around the market for the first time seeing what is for sale and then you can make up your mind as to make up your mind as to what to buy. There are the usual souvenirs and locally made works to buy. In the centre of the market there are art works for sale and some of these artists are very talented with there work. Beware of what you are buying, as we observed a switch of a statue that a person purchased was not the one that they wrapped up for them.
Just a short walk away is Ipanema beach. Relax on the sidewalk and enjoy the scenery sipping on a coconut. On Sundays the side street is closed and people use this as a mode of transportation, cycling, roller blades, running / jogging, or just walking.

I found out about this market from someone who lived in Rio for a few months. If you like markets, this is a very good one. My only disappointment was in not being able to spend more time there. What makes this market stand out is the unique items you can purchase from the people who created them. They also have an area with beautiful paintings by a number of artists. I would suggest bringing enough Reals so that you can purchase your items as credit cards are only accepted at certain vendor stalls. It would be better to go earlier on in the day as the afternoon gets very busy. There is much to see and/or buy, so allow yourself enough time to do so. This place was great!
