Owner description: A hippie hangout in the 1960s, this Sunday market in Ipanema is an entertaining place to browse for arts and crafts, as well as to people watch (at Praca General Osario, 8am-6pm, Sundays).

What a fantastic way to spend a Sunday in Rio. So much to see and everything was slightly cheaper than in more tourist places. We went round and round so many times. And there are many shops and food places around the fair that we went to and then went back to the fair. A MUST DO if you are in Rio on a Sunday.

The Hippie Market is open only on Sundays, and closes before dark. We enjoyed spending a couple hours just browsing through the stalls, and picking up a souvenir or two. Some of the items are unique and handcrafted by the stall owners, who truly enjoy talking about what they do - in Portuguese, of course. There are some food vendors at the outside edges of the market, which provide a great opportunity to sample some wonderful traditional Brazilian dishes, such as acaraje and tapioca.

Note this is open from morning to 5pm. This is a nice way to spend a couple of hours on Sunday just looking through the knickknacks and picking some souvenirs or gifts for home but don't forget to barter. There's also a lot of similar items so make sure you do a cruise around the market before you start buying. It won't take you long & you'll be glad you did in the end.
Then best to get some food and go down to Ipanema beach to enjoy the sun, sand and surf :-D Enjoy!

We spent hours here but felt most items were the kinds of things you can buy at street fairs in NYC--purses, jewelry, not much besides paintings were hand carved. The handicrafts that were there were excellent and interesting. These pieces were not cheap. They were worth the cost.

Bargaining more than 10% was impossible.

Really good market for leather bags, jewellery and small gifts. Some of the stalls sell the same touristy stuff but it is more varied than some of the night markets. There are also paintings and leather goods for sale too.
