Owner description: With architecture inspired by the Mayan pyramids of Mexico, the conical shape is believed to give proximity to God. Four stained glass windows run from floor to ceiling forming a cross at the top. Acoustics are "heavenly" here!

“Modern cathedral in the historical city of Rio”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

Included in a one day tour of Rio de Janeiro was a visit to this beautiful cathedral. When we arrived the outside of the building did not inspire us to go inside but were we glad that we did. The inside of the cathedral is beautiful to say the least. The four stained glass sides of the structure with the sun pouring in to light up the inside was awe inspiring. The way that the four side panels meet up in the ceiling (80 metres above) to form a cross also adds to the pyramid effect. The cathedral can accommodate 20,000 people. The interior quickly captures the solemn side of the visit and walking around and looking at the many statues, murals, paintings and other images leaves you with a feeling of peace. The cathedral is away from the main Copacabana/Ipanema beach area so you would need to take a taxi or bus to downtown Rio to the site.
Our grandson is not impressed easily but even he admitted that it was the most inspiring church he has ever been in. This is a must see for anyone who is interested in architecture, beautiful stain glass windows, not just for those of the Catholic faith.

“Well worth a look at this modern cathedral”
Reviewed February 22, 2013 via mobile

Like all the reviews say this Cathedral looks more like a modern art museum from the exterior with its almost ugly grey conical shape, however its absolutely worth taking some time to appreciate this rather unusually modern Catherdral.
Inside it is spacious with its 400m high ceiling and large open doorways on three sides make it a cool spot to take a moment to find some peace from the hot sun.

“Looks can be deceiving...go inside before judging”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

I saw this on a tour of the city and was not impressed on first sight as it looks like a grey concrete pyramid. However, it is really amazing inside. The stained class windows are sublime and there are a few other interesting things to see inside. Probably not one for kids - well not for too long - but they might be quite impressed by the size & space inside. Definitely worth seeing if you have time, especially for the huge & colourful stained class windows - I hope my photos do them justice!

“when you enter it's breathtaking”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

from outside it doesn't look like a very attractive place to see. but once you enter it's really breathtaking. suddenly you are in a huge space with glass windows. suddenly you don 't hear the noise of metropolis. just silence. enjoy it.
