Beautiful home in a great location, walking distance (some stair climbing on your way back) to shopping, beach, the Metro, bars, dining. All good.

The hosts are wonderfully friendly and very knowledgable about the city. Breakfast was great with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Rooms are clean and comfortable. After our not-so-great experience at a place in Santa Teresa (Casa Cool Beans), Rob and Richard made us feel comfortable and able to enjoy what Rio has to offer. I only wish we had booked with them for our entire stay.

Thanks for your review. We truly aim to provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all of our guests - something relatively straightforward when you enjoy what you do: receiving guests in your own home!

Our location - which is about as central as one can get to the main tourist attractions in Rio (they can be reached in about 30 min on foot for those who prefer walking to taxis) - is something we regard as special. Just 10 min up the hill and you feel like you are out in the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle of a huge city - with wild parrots and toucans and small monkeys visiting our gardens - and we grow our own bananas, papayas, mangoes and avocados on property! (You won't find that at a big hotel in front of the beach).

And those B&B lovers who comment negatively on our home have definitely not experimented a stay in Santa Teresa, where one must virtually rely on taxis for transportation - especially at night - when many are reluctant to take you back to your B&B again!!

Hope to see you back for a longer stay! Best regards, Rob & Richard

We (my wife, 17 year old son and I ) stayed for two nights and found Rob and Richard to be friendly, welcoming hosts in a beautiful B&B. They both speak English and Portuguese and take time to chat with guests and offer advice about visiting Rio.

We booked a triple room and were allocated room 1 which accommodates a single bed in a separate entrance area, with an internal door, providing some privacy for each bit.

The whole place is beautifully designed and furnished with lovely relaxing outside seating areas and bar and views across much of the city. It's surrounded by trees and attracts a few birds.

Everything was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was very nice with a good variety of food, all labelled to explain exactly what it was.

The location is tucked away in a residential area and is not well known - so, on arrival, they give you directions to read out or give to a taxi driver to get back there. Taking their driver for airport transfer on arrival (as we did) therefore, seems like a good a move.

This is a nicely finished B&B which the owners clearly take pride in, and we not hesitate to recommend it.

Room Tip: Room 1 can accommodate a single bed in a separate area - see above.

Thank you folks for your review! It was a pleasure to offer our hospitality to you and your family and we are happy to hear that you enjoyed your experience in our home!

What motivates us is getting the feedback that we were able to make someone's vacation special. We are happy to share the information and personal insights that we have about our city so that our guests can take in as much of the local culture and attractions as time permits. Oh, and of course, help them find the ideal places to relax and enjoy watching a bit of life go by too!!

We pride ourselves in having created this little "oasis" of green in the forest just 10 min walk from the bustle below and have designed our rooms, our common lounge areas, pool bar and gardens for comfort, not luxury. We hope you too will enjoy!

Hope to see you folks again. Best regards, Rob and Richard

My friend and I had an amazing couple of days at O Veleiro with Rob, Richard and Patricia. We wanted to stay somewhere a little away from the tourists where we could retreat each night from all the noises of the big city. And that is exactly what we found! The B&B is like a tropical oasis in a residential area in the hills of the rainforest of Rio. It is truly amazing to wake in the morning to find monkeys in the trees right outside your bedroom!

We had the en-suite bedroom which was spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was amazing and plentiful and we left it every morning a little too full, haha.. Good start to the day! The hosts helped us with any questions we had about the city, and we felt really welcome.

The area is safe, and there is a shortcut down to Botafogo (restaurants, supermarkets, metro and buses) on the stairs. The metro take you to Copacabana and Ipanema fast and efficiently. There are also tons of buses which can take you anywhere in the city.

All in all I couldn't imagine having a better stay in Rio de Janeiro. Absolutely recommended!

Thanks for writing in your comments and we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. We try to make all of our guests feel welcome and to offer a place to relax after a day out touring with a sensation of "coming home"!

We feel the most important thing is that folks who book with us are conscious of where they are planning to stay: this is our family home and while we have adapted it to be able to receive guests, our aim is to offer comfort, security and the normal bed room necessities necessary but not luxury like a boutique hotel... Those who complained about room size chose our smallest, most budget option (and in our opinion were overly critical) but our en-suite room offers plenty of space!

We love our location (as you did) - about a 10 min walk up an old cobble-stoned road in the hills above the hustle and bustle of the crazy city that is Rio below! And the fun of watching the small monkeys in our garden enjoying bananas just an arm's length from guest's camera lens's is an added attraction!

Really hope you'll come back and share more time with us! A big hug from Rob, Richard and Patricia

We had a fantastic time staying with Rob, Richard and Patrica. It is a great location with a beautiful terraced garden and a comfortable and welcoming home. From the time we arrived we immediately felt relaxed and certainly well looked after.Nothing was ever too much trouble!!
It is within easy access to all the important attractions yet tucked away from the busy city life.
A haven after a long day sightseeing. In fact we were back and forth visitting other areas in Brazil and our larger pieces of luggage were looked after without any fuss or charge.
We sampled all their accommodation, each room was spacious, clean and thoughtfully decorated.
The little touches of tissues, alarm clocks and night lights all added to the obvious care and attention paid by the hosts. All this culminated into making our first stay in Brazil so special. There was plenty of informative advice and we would certainly reccommend O Veleiro. Thank you Rob, Richard, Patricia and all the team(including the transfer driver). Keep up all the fabulous work of ensuring us travellers enjoy your delightful home.

Room Tip: Use the short cut steps they are safe when going down into the city and a taxi back of an evening is...

Thanks to both of you for your inspiring review! It was a pleasure for us to offer our home to you folks as a base from which you could make your journeys to discover Brazil!! It is always exciting when guests return, to hear their stories and discover what they most enjoyed in travelling around the country and of course getting up to date "tips" which we in turn can pass on to other guests coming to stay with us.

When we chose this location for our home, we based our decision on the proximity to nearly everything, while at the same time giving one the feeling of having left the "big city" - with the forest all around us, the views, the cooling fresh breezes in summer, and the local flora and fauna - all very different than the rest of Rio just a 10 min walk down the hill!

Sometimes we feel like a few reviewers on TripAdvisor are overly critical and make judgments not on comparisons to other lodging alternatives in Rio (pricing, value and location wise) but perhaps compared to experiences in other countries which offer a very different reality to that found here.

We hope you folks will find another opportunity to come back and visit your son and will discover even more of Brazil on your next trip!

Big hug from all of us - Rob, Richard and Patricia

In my opinion O Veleiro is a five-star Bed & Breakfast (in the Brazilian system classified as Cama e Café or “Hospedagem Domiciliar”). I find it ideal as a home base in Rio de Janeiro when I travel on business. Just back from my fourth stay there now (obviously it’s become a part of my travel plans) and I can make a valid comparison having stayed at many other places in Rio!
First off: the place is stunning. You can’t help but notice how beautiful the setting of the home is, up on one of the hills overlooking Botafogo, built of natural materials such that the entire house has the feel and look of artisanal craftsmanship. You come back from a busy day out sight-seeing or in business meetings and you step into a little piece of paradise: lush gardens, outdoor bar, a quick-dip pool, spacious lounge areas and either a standard sized bedroom or a more spacious en-suite/ family room.
Next: your hosts Richard and Rob are fantastic. They are folksy and savvy, generous in opening their home to receive guests from all different corners of the world and always willing to help you plan your day.
Finally: the rates are simply fantastic for what and where you’re paying for (regular hotels in the Zona Sul of Rio are generally very expensive). Note, they have clear payment policies on their website!
The location is ideal for most of Rio’s big sights, like Sugarloaf, Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana beach, or the Lapa (entertainment) neighborhood. A major shopping center (Botafago Praia Shopping), many restaurants, and the subway are an easy walk, and the “centro histórico”/ financial sector and a good number of the local universities are also easily accessible by subway or cab. Your room—(there are three available)—is simply but beautifully furnished, with convenient bathroom, right off a little patio for the smaller room, or en-suite for the others and with access to a well-stocked mini-bar fridge at the outdoor bar (or in-room for the larger rooms).
Most guests forget that the terrific breakfast is an extra –you’re not being charged for it (so the hours aren’t negotiable!) but the food is just wonderful: a variety of fresh fruit and juices or “smoothies”, breads, cheeses, meats, Brazilian coffee, tea, yogurt, cereals, and the classic Brazilian combo of goiabada (guava paste) with queijo de Minas (a mild white fresh cheese).
Rob and Richard offer many optional services, including: airport pickup, arranging costumes and parade participation (during the Carnival) and many tours in and around the Rio area – Tijuca forest, Petrópolis, Grumari / Abricó beach, Ilha Grande, etc.
I highly recommend O Veleiro B&B, whose hosts do such an excellent job of maintaining their tropical treasure on the hill. If you are looking for something different, you will love it!

Thanks for your review! It is always great to have you back with us and to know you choose coming back here AFTER having compared us to a myriad of other lodging possibilities in the city and around Brazil.

We feel it is important to remind guests though, that when choosing to stay with us you are coming to share our home - not a hotel or boutique pousada. We offer a secure, comfortable property with reasonably sized rooms (our largest is the same size as a famous business hotel offers in front of the beach - a 10 min taxi ride away - but at 5x the price!).

We recognize that when guests are visiting on business, a series of other factors become important too, such as providing good WiFi connections, small/ home office facilities, a comfortable quiet working area where one can prepare for meetings, arranging transportation/ taxi services, ensuring a good nights rest with comfortable beds etc.

On the other hand, offering a comfortable, relaxing place to come "home" from after the office - our bar area and garden lounge, our indoor "salas" and common areas (for days when the weather isn't as perfect as it normally is in Rio...) and as you mention, our dip pool for cooling off on hot summer nights!

Besides a wealth of information on Rio (and the rest of Brazil - including guidebooks in our guest library) and plenty of helpful advise on how, where, when and what to do in the city - we also offer as you mention, additional services such as arranging tours, hikes and walks around Rio, (one of us is a registered guide with the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism), organizing Samba parade tickets and Costumes (Fantasias) for the Carnival etc.

We feel "Value and location" should be rated relative to other properties IN Rio - but it seems some guests make comparisons based on their experiences in other countries. At the moment Rio on the whole IS more expensive than many other travel options... Try staying at big hotel in Copacabana and then compare...

Looking forward to your next visit! A big hug (um grande abraço) -Rob and Richard

O Veleiro B&B was our favorite place to stay in Rio. It is located in the green forested hills just above the subway in Botafogo. The location is perfect as it is centrally located in relation to most of the sights. We walked to the Corcovado tram station in about 25 min. and just a little bit more time to the Sugar Loaf. At night it was quite easy to get back home quickly by taxi from Copacabana or LAPA where there are great Brazilian music bars. The rooms are clean and nice and cool in the evening. There was generally a fresh breeze. I really loved the patio and gardens. It was a nice place to relax in the evening before we went out for dinner. Rob and Richard and the staff were great. Very helpful with information and they gave me maps of the area and explained how to find the sights. They also had a fantastic breakfast. I would definitely suggest this as a great place to stay if you would like to see how real Brazilians live and get away from the typical hotel experience.

Room Tip: We liked the larger ensuite room.

Thanks for your review! We love to get feedback from guests - especially those who have stayed at more than one place in Rio allowing them to make a valid comparison between lodging options - and are especially happy to hear that we were your favorite!!

Our aim is to offer something completely different from the generally "impersonal" hotel experience - in opening up our home and our little forested "oasis" up here on the hill. Perhaps it takes a little more effort to get up here than to stay at the big hotels down on the strip - but we believe the payback for most well out does the effort - and the savings, even if one uses taxis all the time instead of walking down and using metro or bus -are definitely worth it!

Even unlike the other B&B options up in Santa Teresa, where it is virtually a requirement to use taxis (or bus service during daytime hours) to get around - here as you point out, the main tourist attractions can be reached in around 30 min on foot!

We make breakfasts a special start to each day - with plenty of options to choose from for nearly all appetites and diets - don't want anyone leaving the house hungry!

Hope to see you again soon here in Rio! best regards, Rob and Richard

Yes it might be cumbersome and annoying at first not to be able to pay by credit card but we were informed upfront. As we didn't just come for the beach we found the location perfect to go and see all area's from Rio. Around 15 minutes down to busses and the metro. In the evening it's better to take a taxi anyways so no bothering walking up. We got good advise and tips.
Breakfast was absolutely great. Clean towels every day. Rio isn't cheap so take that into account. This is a charming place to stay with a family like atmosphere. All in all we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in the room with ensuite and bathroom, perfect if your staying for more then 2 days

Thanks for your review! We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us.

We are always confused when people complain about us NOT accepting credit cards. It is written up on our site, in our offer emails - and again in the confirmation emails we send out. We would have thought that if it was an issue to pay by card - guests simply wouldn't book with us - not book and then complain about it later? It seems many people don't read and also don't have any idea of how much the banks charge with commission fees, credit card reader rental fees, bank account fees (besides the overhead and delays in receiving payments) etc. All this extra charge has to be included somehow in the nightly room charges guests pay. We prefer to keep prices lower and accept cash only...

Also as you indicated: we feel it is important that guests are aware of where they will be staying when they make their choice to share our home with us. If you are looking for purely a "Rio beach experience" you will probably be happier at one of the big hotels across the street from Copacabana or Ipanema beaches. If however, your aim is to see a broad range of the city and the main tourist attractions and are looking for somewhere comfortable, secure, friendly and in a "homelike atmosphere" - we welcome you to experiment our hospitality on your stay here in Rio - we think you will be happy with your choice.

Again in our opinion: value and rooms should be compared to what other places IN Rio offer with the same level of quality and services - not to what you might be able to find in other cities. Rio IS currently expensive - to live in and to visit.

Hope we'll see you back again one of these days! Best regards, Rob and Richard

Besides a variety of fresh tropical fruits and homemade juices, Brazilian coffee, assortment of herbal and black teas, hot and cold chocolate, assorted cereals, cold cuts, cheeses, homemade preserves, jams and jellies, cakes and eggs cooked to order, depending on the day we offer waffles, tapioca, pastries, and other specialty items! Our spacious, 4 story, heritage style, family home Bed and Breakfast (Cama e Café or “Hospedagem Domiciliar” - the correct term used to describe this type of accommodation in Brazil), is located on a quiet, cobble stoned road about 1.5 km up a picturesque hillside, which opened the way for horse drawn carriages to the south zone of Rio de Janeiro from the Centro in the early 1830’s.
