“You have to go”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

You simply have to go to the most famous beach in the world. They are doing a better job at security, you can rent a chair and an umbrella for 5 dollars and spend the day. Get a coconut or a caipirinha and just watch peple. The vendors are really entertaining. If you walk to the right you can get to Leblon, which is more quiet. I love it.

“beach with most beautiful sunset in Rio”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

there are three sunsets you have to experience in Rio: one on Corcovado, one on top of the Sugar Loaf and one on Ipanema. you will experience one of those moments you see in pictures of Rio.
beach is clean, not overcrowded (if you don't go on weekends or during the carnival). just stand in the water and wait for those huge waves to splash you. once you get through them, you can have a very nice swim. when you turn back towards beach, look up. you will see Corcovado and the statue of Christ the redeemer on its top.

“Most Colorful Beach I've Visited!”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

The beach between Postos 8 and 9 in Ipanema is the most colorful I've visited so far in the world. It's the gay beach of Ipanema, marked by a rainbow flag and is bustling with vendors selling everything from sungas to fried cheese, "barbies" in said sungas primping and posing, and party music. It's just a fun atmosphere. The guys you rent chairs and umbrellas from will check in on you periodically if you need anything like a drink. And while there certainly are an abundance of incredibly good-looking, well-sculpted hunks that frequent the beach, it's not intimidating at all because there's also lots of average guys too. The waves can be big and there is a strong current so you must pay attention and be careful when in the water!

“Loong and sweet”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

Very nice and comforting walk from Arpoador towards Leblon with Dos Hermanos mountains always calling in the distance, nice people all around and marvellous clean water. Perfect distance between shoreline and esplanade, too.

“Ipanema Beach”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

We stayed both in Ipanema and Copacabana, and found the Ipanema Beach less crowded and more low key. the guidebook descriptions of Ipanema are accurate: more upscale, safe to walk around in, and less frantic. We saw a very visible police presence throughout the beach areas, and felt quite safe. Most of the buildings have modern but elegant gates, and most of the buildings and shops have watchmen outside at night. All this does not convey the feeling of an armed camp, but gives extra life to the street. The guidebooks are wrong about men's beach wear. Many men wore long surfer swimsuits, while others wore the traditional Speedo-style suits. As for the ladies, it is true that their suits are almost nonexistent.
