“very nice beach for the city”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

as a city beach its very nice, you can go for a walk, have a fresh coconut sit in a many beach cafes, we liked it but preferred Ipanema for a swim.

“All it's made out to be”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

I loved Copocabana beach. It's buzzing much of the time and great for people watching or sitting at a bar drinking a Mojito! They say that Ipanema is more in vogue but I don't agree.
My enduring experience is getting up at 6am and walking down the beach and then strolling back paddling n the waves. Hardly anyone around and a magical experience. Beautiful also to look out of your hotel window and night and see the curve of the beach framed with lights and also a fantastic view from Sugarloaf Mt.
Met all my expectations and I have travelled extensively.

“New Year Spectacular”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

I love New Year in Rio, spectacular fireworks, 2.5 million people on the beach, samba, and a great party. The atmosphere is electric, what an experience!
Unfortunately, there is the crime element as in all Brasil, and more importantly, don't expect public transport or regular taxi's until around 3am.

“2.5 million cats say "YES"”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

Arrived 30th December 2013 in time for New Year's Eve celebrations. Fireworks were awesome and watched by an estimated 2.5 million people. Rio certainly puts some effort into the event, huge stage on the beach by Copacabana palace hotel, with world know artistes performing until very late in the morning.
The beach, during the day is mega crowded with established shacks selling cool drinks and some have food. They will charge you for chairs or sunbeds (10 rials a chair) even if you have drinks. The people watching is very entertaining, lots, and I mean LOTS, of naked flesh. Even the bulkiest of figures wear thong bikinis! A lot of men wear very skimpy cover - eye watering!
Sadly, as hot as it gets, the sea is very polluted so not advisable to spend more than a quick dip in it, but there are fresh water shower heads dotted along the sand.
The night life is very busy, more so away from the beach area, with bars and restaurants serving food and drink until really late, or early depends which way you read your watch!

This beach is not swimmable! the water is dark brown and smells. Got our feet wet just to say we went in the water at Copacabana beach. The people watching is great. We were there for new years eve celebrations which were fantastic. Very disappointed to have flown all the way from Australia where our beaches are beautiful to arrive at a third world beach. Hotels are expensive but the beach views are amazing. My tip is to stay in the downtown area which has a very European feel to it with old buildings, laneways and cobbled-stoned streets. I will never return to Copacabana beach.
