Sand, surf and lots of people. Get a coffee , sit at a bar and people watch - interesting. Big people, small people, young people, old people, kids playing in the sand.

“Her name was Lola....”
Reviewed November 7, 2012 via mobile

Soooo you know it isn't the cleanest ! But come on, your in RIO baby!!! This beach is the most liveliest beach before Ipanema i have ever seen! So many activities to do, why not join the locals!? This place is happening man, just use common-sense. Food choices are better here than Ipanema.. But tons more vendors although the weekend gets hit both equally! But it's expected & you see a lot of cool things. The waves are rough and even more in Ipanema..WATCH OUT! Almost every other day i heard of someone drowning :(

“How to describe Copacabana without being unfair?”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

Looking for a narrow and cozy beach? For relaxing ambiance? For calm, tranquility and pure nature? Then Copacabana is not for you!

Vibrant, urban, multicultural, authentic, located at the heart of a metropolis, with its undeniable beauty, joyful, full of joggers in fancy dress, crowded on weekends & holidays, but not Mon-Fri.

How to describe Copacabana Beach without being unfair?

Its golden soft sand is really exquisite for a city beach. The beach is stunning and the atmosphere is fantastic! Crowded with tourists and locals alike, but it is the locals who set the relaxing & vibrant Brazilian atmosphere with their lovely music, their volleyball/football games and their pushy vendors (Buy one thing from a beach vendor & the rest of them will be on you like flies on honey!). Part of the culture!

“Copa” (as locals call it) never disappoints. Carefree, joyous, sexy, egalitarian. Probably the most famous urban city in the world! Full of not so slim girls/women in super teeny bikinis, Copacabana is legendary...!!!

Sometimes the water may be ice cold  (even by Argentinian standards) and the beach is quite crowded on the weekends & holidays (there is always room to lay out a towel or two, or rent a chair and umbrella, though). Admittedly the weather was bad when we were there!

Sellers come by with every type of food and commodity – annoying at times, amusing at others. Fresh fruit, freshly cooked beef kabbabs and fresh roasted nuts. And much, much more! Locals wearing shorts and flipflops without any care in the world at all! A culture really oriented towards the great natural beauty of its beaches!

A 50's song called it "the little princess of the sea". Currently, Cariocas take it for granted. In fact, Copa can spoil anyone! It would – for sure – rank among the top city beaches in the world, not to say the very first one!

Security used to be a problem two decades ago, but now it seems to be under control. It is indeed a People Watcher's paradise! The beach is more of a leisure centre! People exercising along the beach (inspiring even for those who are not exercise lovers, like me!). Sun-bathers, plenty of restaurants that line Avenida Atlantica (Copacabana's distinctive and famous wave-patterned sidewalk), the very popular coconuts with straws, string bikinis, lockers, clean bathrooms. Sandcastle sculptures. What else can you ask for?

Sometimes the water may be dirty. It seems to be seasonal, though. The Government does its best to keep the beach clean, in spite of the thousands of people who go there every day. The beach is combed with rakes and litter is picked up every afternoon/evening after dark falls.

Copa is any beach lover's dream spot because it is more than a beach! Copacabana IS Río! The whole city revolves around Copa!

Sit back, relax and enjoy a refreshing caipirinha!

Was there 30 years ago. Came back, this time with my 24-year-old daughter. Found it as BEAUTIFUL and MARAVILHOSA as always!

“So many choices!”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

You can people watch, eat, drink, sun bathe, swim, jog, bike ride, shoot pics, or join in on a game of beach volleyball or paddle ball. Only thing minor negative...if you buy one thing from a beach vendor, the rest of them will be on you like flies on honey! Ha!

“beach and town”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

We really liked Copacabana beach way better than Ipanema. It has very wide and clean beach walk with many restaurants. There is plenty of people exercising, great for people watching. We especially loved the option of sitting in one of the restaurants next to beach with a drink and kids would be happily digging in the sand next to us :) - everyone happy.
