I know a lot of people find history a real turn off. For those of you who wish to understand how this large sprawling country went from a colony to an imperial monarchy and then a republic, this s your place. The staff are very helpful and there is an excellent restaurant too. The requisite artefacts are displayed very well, the interspersed notes in each evolutionary section are bilingual: Portuguese and English. No punches are pulled describing the ultimate end of the indigenous people and the degradation caused by centuries of African slavery, although to criticise the imperial regime for perpetuating the slave trade was a bit much. Coffee harvesting depended on large numbers of poorly paid workers, the dispossessed even after slavery was abolished. I would suggest two visits rather than one prolonged too long. An absolute national treasure though.

The name of this museum is a bit misleading: the museum is ok - it gives a decent cultural history. However, this isnt a NATURAL history museum. Its pretty far out of the way from other sites, so unless you are in the area its really something to go out of your way to see.
