For R$6 per person and everything in English it's worth a visit to brush up on your Brazilian history. Perhaps a 1-2 hour visit will do. I though all in all it was good.

Huge collection of Brazilian history. There are a lot of old carriages and cannons used to protect the brazilian coast. Beautiful and important paintings.

We totally loved this museum. Do not understand the negative comments. The place was large and covered a lot of the history of Brazil. We spent about 2 hours here.

Do watch out for the young guys who appear to be friendly but are most likely pick-pockets. We spotted 3 of them but the guards in each section did deter them from following us.

Expected to see something bigger, but not too disappointed. Unfortunately dint know portugese so could not follow anything, it had few mummies, dinosaur skeletons, meteors, things from Amazonian tribes etc which was interesting to see. U can cover the whole in 1 hour. Entry was 3Real per head.

Maybe because I am Brazilian(and here we don't give usualy so much value about our museum and cultures as in many other countries) and I'm a History student I liked this museum a lot. I went in on Friday morning to an interesting lecture about education and prison system in Brazil so the entry was free(it's 6 reais, and for students and teachers 3 reais). In the museum lectures and other cultural activities are often happening, so check the scheduling.
The building was home of the 1st Emperor who visited - and not a commom visit, as he came to Brazil in 1808 to live with all the royal court - his colony. There's a big permanent exposition of coins and many objects, and art, for sure, of all Brazilian History times. Information is provided in English and Portuguese for most of the things as far I remember.
When we're almost going out of the museum, a very kind worker of the museum gave us a tip to come back to see 'The Riachuelo Battle'(Victor Meirelles, a famous Brazilian artist) painting because of its visual illusion - go from the right side to the left just looking at the centra ship. Its stern will change direction while you walk.
I think it's worth a visit if you want a Rio de Janeiro that can show more than beaches and the Cristo Redentor.
