Other reviewers below have provided excellent descriptions of how and when to get tickets. We were lucky that the private tour guide, Neyla Bontempo, provided us that information ahead of time.

The theater was renovated in 2010, and is magnificent. The tour doesn't take long, and our English speaking guide did a good job of explaining and letting us ask questions about the place.

A recommended tour in Rio if you have time.

Have been many times to Rio
This is my first visit to this beautiful theatre. has wonderful history paintings and murals in excellent
Condition As you walk around it is like you are in a museum Grand staircase like a large palace
Small snack area for food as tour as well as during performances
Look for times for English tours. Guide was excellent and her English was best I have had in BRASIL. I speak Portuguese but with Americans we were traveling with so helpful as they do not
Have on one or 2 Sundays a month a FREE concert ...first come first serve
What a great gift to see a performance in such a magnificent setting ...NOT too big so most all seats good

Amazing tour- ticket purchase was confusing!!
Did a tour of the theatre in English on Wednesday at 4pm. Only cost 10real ($5 aus) for a very informative 45min tour of the restoration of the theatre and how it is run today. Ticket pick up and purchase is pretty confusing (especially that no one speak English and there are no signs!) follow Kirsty Beavon (below) about how to get them!
Basically you have to turn up 30minutes before the tour starts and receive a ticket from the security officer at the door (he's in a black shirt- can't speak English) take this ticket inside, further down the side of the theatre to pay for the guided tour...then head back outside to the security guard and line up 15mins before the tour starts.
You'll watch a movie (5mins) and then get a guided tour around the theatre- our guide was fantastic!!
We were also fortunate enough to go to the opera that night too!

The Teatro is a must for tourist for two main reason: the theatre itself and where is located. The tour of the theatre is very interesting and just magical, history seems to come particularly alive there if you can go to a show there. Everything is very well kept for an old building. They offer tours in English. I would really recommend the ballet shows there.

The area where the theatre is, a more classical town centre than the rest of Rio, is utterly charming. The cafes nearby are great, the square is also beautiful and there is just so much of that delicate yet obvious vibe that Rio is famous for.

This is a timeless must for tourists and locals!

We went to visit the Theatro Municipal, purely on trip advisor comments and it exceeded our expectations! It is a little confusing buying the tickets though, when you arrive and you walk through the gates on your right, there will be a guard you have to obtain a white ticket from him for the English Tour. These tickets are only available 30 minutes before the tour starts. Tours are at 11, 12, 3 and 4. They go for one hour. Then you must take this white ticket down to the Ticketing, which is located towards the back of the Theatre, on your right, past the gift shop. You have to show the ticketing official your white ticket and then you pay him 10R per person for the tour. You can only pay him 30 minutes before the tour starts. You need to line up to start the tour about 15 minutes before the tour starts near where you received your first ticket from the guard. They can't speak English, so it's best to follow these instructions! The tour itself is great, the tour-guide can speak perfect English and was extremely informative about the Theatre and its restoration. You watch a 5 minute video that shows images of the restoration progress - it's incredible. Then you take a tour throughout the theatre, stage, waiting area and main entrance. It really is worth a look. We were also fortunate to get tickets to the opera, Carmen - you can buy tickets for performances at the ticketing booth, prices start from 25R for the gallery seats. Absolutely fantastic!!
