Many people these days don't know that Rio was once known as the "Paris of Latin America". This was until the 1950/60s when all the beautiful old architecture was bulldozed to build awful skyscrapers. If you are still willing to hunt and seek, however, you can find the gems.

Amazing! Going inside is like traveling in time! From outside is beautiful too. But if you are going as a tourist to downtown Rio... maybe is better to go during the weekend. It is too crowded during week days!

This is one of the most beautiful buildings in downtown Rio and a good stop if you come down to see the old colonial architecture. It's the highlight of the attractions around Cinelandia (skip the fine arts museum). There is a paid English tour a couple times a day. The guides are informative and the building is truly marvelous.

We visited the Teatro Municipal via a guided tour offered by the theater in several languages. The guide was quite good in explaining virtually all areas of the theater except backstage (too much activity going on back there). Trying to figure out how to buy tickets was a bit of a challenge. We had to get "passes" from the guard at the entrance first and then show those to the ticket counter folks in order for them to sell us actual tickets. For a while I thought we were on Candid Camera, but it all worked out. The main performance hall is beautiful but the side lounges, staircase gallery, and the lower level plus the balcony overlooking Avenida Rio Branco were my favorites. Definitely worth a visit.

It's a very nice fully renovated theater in the centre of town. To enjoy the theater you need to book an inside tour which is very nice. There are limited places on the tour which is almost every hour. At the entrance they give you a voucher with a time slot. Then 1/2 hour before you can buy the ticket at the counter which is inside and a little further inside the gate. If you get a very late time slot, just go to the ticket counter and ask for availability at the next tour. We were lucky with that and just took us 15 minutes waiting. If your not lucky at all or you don’s have time, ask to go to the restroom inside. This will give you a glimpse of the inside although very limited. You will be guided through the whole building including a view in the concert room from the balcony. Very nice to see this all !
