Owner description: Whether to attend a show or take a tour, it’s worth seeing this lavish 1909 theater, filled with gilded mirrors, statues, murals, stained-glass windows and sparkling chandeliers.

Paid a visit on a wet and wind day in Rio!  They have guided tours during the day for R$10. Confusing system to get in though- you have to get a token from the guy in black on the door and then go to the box office to buy the ticket-BUT they only have a limited # of tickets per visit and they only start handing the tokens out 30mins before the start of the tour! Once inside the guide said she would not speak the whole tour in English (it was given in Portuguese) but she did answer my many questions. Very beautiful interior around the actual theatre- which unfortunately we only got to 'see' in the dark as they were sorting the lighting out for the weekend show! Worth a visit when it rains!!

For those who like music and architecture must see this site. Witness the symphony Brazilian ($ 10.00 per person) celebrating 100 years of the great Brazilian maestro Eleazar de Carvalho but also has the osquestra Petrobras and other shows. The French style architecture lends an air of nineteenth century cool.
good acoustics. Buy your ticket online (ingresso.com). This all night but it is worth a day trip to enjoy the sunshine outside the restoration done. Pure culture. After or before .. you can have a beer at the bar yellowing of Cinelândia.

some wonderful concerts but be warned: ice cold inside !! since being refurbished, they can't seem to run the air con. on any temperature except ICE -- artisits complain and some (singers mostly) have it turned off -- and still nothing gets done -- if you want to pay R$ 450 for an orchestra seat and get sick, this is the place for you -- real shame as it's such a beautiful building........

The Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro is beautiful. I have had the opportunity to do the tour, very comprehensive and well explained, you can perform seasonal income paying very cheap. Lovers of the arts will enjoy this ride

Pretty from the outside, the area is a bit dodgy after rush hour and on weekends so lone travellers, time your visits well. I didn't go inside so can't comment further
