some wonderful concerts but be warned: ice cold inside !! since being refurbished, they can't seem to run the air con. on any temperature except ICE -- artisits complain and some (singers mostly) have it turned off -- and still nothing gets done -- if you want to pay R$ 450 for an orchestra seat and get sick, this is the place for you -- real shame as it's such a beautiful building........

The Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro is beautiful. I have had the opportunity to do the tour, very comprehensive and well explained, you can perform seasonal income paying very cheap. Lovers of the arts will enjoy this ride

Pretty from the outside, the area is a bit dodgy after rush hour and on weekends so lone travellers, time your visits well. I didn't go inside so can't comment further

Theatro Municipal (yes, it is spelled with an 'h' after the 'T') is worthy of a visit either during a guided tour, or (better) during a performance. It is acoustically excellent (I sat in several seats at different levels and all were good) - though I think the best seats are in the front row of Balcão Nobre. The hall and the surrounding corridors are decorated by original paintings and sculptures, arguably the most impressive is the 1908 12m x 16m stage curtain "A Influência das Artes na Civilização" by Elisau Visconti (1866-1944). The pricing of tickets by the theater is a bit capricious, still many shows sell out. Do not worry if you have to sit in the less expensive Galleria (just as long you are not too far away from the center). The Box Office opens one hour before curtain. It is not easy to find - if you are facing the main entrance it is on the left (behind the iron fence), several doors down. Unless you speak Portuguese you are better off presenting the name of the show and the ticket type you seek to the ticket-seller on a piece of paper. Beware of scalpers on the street who may try to sell you discounted tickets for children... The ushers may send you away if you are an adult...
