Owner description: Inside this French Renaissance-style building is a collection of paintings by Brazil's finest contemporary artists as well as an impressive array of folk and African art.

This museum's collection deserves a better building. That said, it is worth checking out if you like fine art. I especially liked their 20th Century galleries.

Plus it is easy to get to in the city center.

We went there with our 6 years old daughter. There were a small group wainting outside, but we had to wait for more than half an our, on the street otside, avoiding beggars and junkies.
Inside another half deception, with lots o non authentic pieces af art. The "arte sacra" exposition was nice.

The museum is now free - which was a pleasant surprise. The museum is in the former Arts Academy and is a beautiful, classic building right on Rio Branco - in front of the Theatre.

The collection has a chronological angle, portraying national art through the Brazilian history - easy toplace in political an social contexts.

I find the staff attentive and helpful - although no english - and I have passed by the museum with a few groups on out city tours.

We came here on a rainy day in Rio (it does happen) and were surprised by such a vast collection of Brazilian art. The staff at the door were very helpful and told us that we needed to get a ticket, although it is free they need to know the number of visits. The copies of statues from the Louvre and other respected art museums was interesting but the main sites were on the second floor. It seems that there is a specific route that the guards want you to take and we found no point in arguing. The top floor has some modern art on it, which is not to my taste, but some of the larger oil on canvas paintings are spectacular, especially the "Battle of Avai" which I had read about in a previous review and was worried I would miss. It was nice to see paintings in well known artistic styles painted by relatively unknown (Brazilian) painters. Unfortunately they did not sell a guide book.

Grand old building in the heart of Rio, displaying only the works of Brazillian artists. Painting and sculpture. Many of the paintings in desperate need of cleaning and restoration. Admission is free. If you are lucky, there may be a lunchtime musical concert in one of the large salons in the building. The restored opera house is across the street and also a good destination. Located at the Cinelandia metro station.
