The view from the room is breathtaking.
The hotel is old but the reception has been fully renovated. I was on a floor where all rooms have been renovated. Large rooms with wooden floors.
Subway station close to the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for renovated floors.

An old hotel, suffering of overwhelming lack of charm, but with a fully refurbished lobby. In the dark and somber hallways and elevators, expect to watch some ghosts. All the rooms looks fully renewed. The standard rooms have no window view at all (terrible), but are relatively silent. The noisy “superior” rooms have view to a corner garden; and the also noisy “deluxe” rooms have a very nice view to the Flamengo park and Sugar Loaf. The old window-type air conditioners make noise worse. Since you have a dozen different types of room, consider the above classification.
A nice free continental buffet breakfast, but you have to wait the "pageboys" to serve you coffee and milk, and it can take a while.
Front office can be totally indiferent or amiable. They were friendly to me, but tried to charge me a couple of things I didn't ordered, and insisted to. They also did the same to other people, so be careful. It was very annoying.
Fees are acceptable (for Rio’s standards, since this is an unfairly expensive city), but the reason is it's location: an affluent yet not a mainstream place of the town. Just one block from a subway station. A half way between the downtown and the southside beaches (in other words, a little bit far from both), but no great places to watch, eat or shop nearby.
At least they are renewing the rooms (even they are not in mint state at all), a thing you usually don`t see in old hotels in Rio.
Not my first choice, but if you are looking for a secure, comfortable base camp to visit some clients or trade partners, you can consider it for your next business trip.

We went here for the price. $200 a night during New Years when everyone else charges for comparable rooms $700 to $1700 a night this week. I was warned it had to be a dump. No way. The room is clean and nice, exactly the photo they show online, and the staff is one of the most friendly ensembles I have ever experienced. Highly recommend it.

This is a hotel that goes back to the 40's, when Rio was barazilian capital. It is located right beside Catete Palace and side rooms have a beautiful view of its garden and the sugar loaf.
I got a huge, recently redecorated room (that was room 632, in case
you are wondering) facing the park
and a cutsy 2-chair tea table where
i'd stay for hours admiring a real-life postcard. Rooms 832, 932 and 1032 might have even better views.
As it turns out, I got lucky: i travel with a huge team and not everyone got a redecorated room. They say the outdated rooms smell funny.
In the rooms, you can only find dsl-internet. They'll sell you a cable so that you can connect to it.
If you do have an ipad, helas, there's wi-fi at the lobby.
Metro is just a block away, beach is right in front of the façade.

Locals say their FEIJOADA (brazilian pièce de resistence, a black-beans based dish) is a must-try. Mark your calender, for it is served on
friday, whereas feijoada is, traditionally, a saturday dish.

This a 1950s hotel that has been renewed. Not at all a boutique hotel, but certainly clean and for a reasonable fare. Located in a classic and not so obvious part of Rio, has a terrific view to the Sugar Loaf and Guanabara bay. Rigth across the street there is a great park (Museu da Republica), which makes it specially friendly for children. Public transportation is also at hand. Metro, bus and cab. Friendly staff, clean and spacious rooms. A good pick.

We stayed here last year and we got a room with Sugar Loaf view. The room is small and very noisy. The furniture is old. The breakfast is excelent.
A curious note: When Pelé did his 1000 gol, he stayed in a room at this hotel. There is a comemorative chart in the front desk!
