Copacabana Sol Hotel
Ranked #139 of 286 Hotels in Rio de Janeiro

I checked in to a triple room with two other friends. We went up to the 9th floor and saw our room. Initial impression is that this hotel seemed like it was an old building that could use some refurbishing, but was serviceable. I saw that there were quite a few (maybe 15-20) bugs crawling around the headboards of the beds. I am not sure what a bedbug looks like (and my friend thought these were ants) -- however, I do not want to take chances with bedbugs. So I went down to reception to inform them, and request a room change. Their initial response was to change the pillows. This was not acceptable. We were moved to another room on the 9th floor, which was a little bigger, but only 1 bed (for 3 people). The maid turned the couch in to a bed, and 2 of us shared a queen size, so it worked out. This room was much better than the previous and seemed well kept. Your experience here could vary, but based on the overall condition of the hotel, and the quality of our first room it is hard for me to recommend this hotel to others.

On the plus side, the location on Rua Santa Clara is nice because it is basically central Copacabana and you can easily walk to either end of the beach for different restaurants, bars, places. The hotel staff were pretty nice, but I still would have appreciated a different suggestion for bugs other than to change pillows.

This hotel is located near Copacabana's busiest intersection. Convenient for pulbic transportation (bus stops 50m, metro and airport bus 250m or so), the beach is a couple of blocks away, lots of local businesses nearby too.
The drawback is that the it can be noisy - even at rainy Sunday mornings (no double glazed windows). The cleaning staff also start slamming the fire doors at 8 am, not the most pleasant sound to wake up to.
The rather small rooms seem to have been adapted from old apartments and have a tired 70s look (no wall to wall carpet, though). The water basin is minuscule, the water (for brushing teeth, don't dare drinking it) tastes awful and I'm not sure the old air conditioning equipment (fortunately not needed in June) is being cleaned regularly (didn't seem so). From inside, it looks more like a pension, to be honest.
The free wi-fi speed is ok for checking emails but unreliable for business purposes.

Room Tip: Higher rooms = less street noise

I left my Sony Walkman on my unmade bed as I went out for breakfast. I locked the room. When I returned the maid had been....cleaned, made my bed but the walkman had GONE! It was blatently obvious that the maid had STOLEN my walkman as she had a key and she cleaned the room. Typical Rio, full of thieves, you can't relax and enjoy your holiday. Never mind being paranoid about thieves on the streets, you need to watch out for some 'so called' professional hotel staff. They are supposed to look after you the best they can but they are quite happy to take your money for accommodation, then steal your possesions behind your back, then they don't care when you complain about a theft. Avoid staying at Copacabana.... Ipanema and Leblon are much safer and nicer areas.

Hotel and room is average compared to other hotels in the area. I was fortunate to only stayed here for a few days, a couple that I was travelling with continued to stay at this hotel and on their last night the room was broken into, the safe was blown up and they took everything. The hotel staff were not very helpful.

We spent three nights here during a city break from Salvador.

As with most hotels, they spend the most money on the lobby to try and fool punters into thinking the rest of the hotel will be as plush. The lobby of the Copacabana Sol is done up with designer furniture but when you get to the rooms it's another matter.

Tiny rooms, with tiled floors and rattling air conditioning. Plus an outrageously expensive mini bar. We had to move rooms because of a swarm of ants invaded the room and the cleaning of the room left a lot to be desired.

On the plus side the location is great, just two blocks from Copacabana beach and the receptionists spoke great English. The breakfast spread was also very impressive, the banana cake and bread rolls were awesome! Rio is an awesome city and I suppose we got used to the extreme luxury of Vila Gale Mares in Salvador where we were based.

Must try harder!

Arrived here and got myself the most expensive rooms they had. The price was about 70 US$. I chose the hotel because they had internet wifi connection. even when the price for that was quite high (0.3 R$ / min).
I work a lot in the internet thats why my internet bill after 24hours was over 150 R$ already and this with an internet connection that keeps on breaking down, is sometimes very slow, and, altogether I was loosing a lot of time paying this fee.
Also the service was poor. First when I couldnt log into the net I called the reception (no one told me about the configs) and after it didnt work with the password he gave me, he just told me (on the phone) that I would have to use the buisness center then. Highly unfriendly. I called there severel times again and ´finally it worked (but never came anyone to show me anything).
Then I had a friend visiting me and they told her I wouldnt be in this hotel. After she called me and she passed again, they said visitors are not allowed in the room.
The rooms themself are ok but also some lights didnt work and they were restaurating with hammers in the morning time.
I defenitly dont recommend this hotel for this price!
