I did not regret choosing this hotel. It has a great location in between Copacabana (2 blocks away to the beach & Avenida Atlantica, the major avenue that runs along the entire shoreline) and Ipanema (4 blocks away). In my entire stay in Rio, I just walked around the two famed beaches from the hotel. A supermarket is located nearby on the way to Ipanema and ATM machines are also a walk away.

Although the hotel seems old, my room was newly renovated. Housekeeping service was par excellence, generally staff were helpful although some of them did not speak English. Breakfast had a lot of choices and it was included in the rate. Heaven for me was the free wi-fi all throughout the hotel. The hotel has this energy saving lighting system that lights would only turn on in the corridor when it senses people in the area. Cool but it created a somehow eerie feeling.

This hotel is perfectly situated between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. It is clean, neat, well run, and has every amenity you need. The breakfast buffet is very good. The only drawback is the pickpockets and thieves in this area of Rio. Watch your stuff!

We stayed here in March for the Carnival. The hotel staff were invariably friendly and helpful - starting with before our stay when I called up to ask for a higher floor room (thanks to advice on other TripAdvisor reports - thanks to everyone for comments!) and to check if they had hairdryers in the rooms. It took them a minute to find someone who spoke good English - thanks Fatima, but all went well. Our room was on 11th floor, so very little street noise, and we backed onto the lift, but the aircon was quite loud, so we slept well insulated from outside noise. Nice and cool too - aircon worked efficiently. Room and bathroom fairly small but fine - could do with more coathangers for 2 people for week's stay, but that's a minor quibble. I liked the top floor tiny pool (more for a dip than a swim, but a good idea to cool off) and patio area, nice to sit and read after an active day. Downstairs, the bar tender made excellent cocktails and was very pleasant, the front desk staff were cooperative and efficient (let us check in at 9am and gave us a late check out at 1pm without extra charge). Breakfast is good, fruit very fresh, and who could complain about chicken soup for breakfast - may be unusual to European taste but very good! Pancakes and waffles on other days, and I had forgotten how good fried bananas are. We didn't use the restaurant in the evening but one of our colleagues did, and he said it was excellent and well priced. Yes, the staff hang around at breakfast but they are looking out to replace the plate of mango, not looking over your shoulder. The hotel is near Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, you are really spoiled for the location, and also near Ipanema square (Hippy Market), a couple of metro stops, and lots of good restaurants - Zaza recommended! Hotel has free internet from pcs in the bar area - excellent, we needed them to check our bank account and found our we had had our cards scammed - watch out for using European cards in the ATMS even inside the banks - I think Citibank was OK. We'd stay here again for sure if we came to Rio again. It's not 5 star but tries hard to be good.

We stayed at Hotel South American Copacabana for 3 nights and we liked it.
The location is perfect, right between Copacaban and Ipanema, just 5 - 10 minutes walk to each beach. The area round the hotel feels very safe and it´s also close to restaurangs, shops and supermarkets.
The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful. The breakfastbuffé was very good with lots of warm and cold dishes to choose from, various breads and juices and so on. A good start on the day.
Our room was very spacious, clean, nicly furnitured with both a sitting group in one part of the room and a sofa on the other part. Nice and comfortable beds. The bathroom was also very clean and fresh.
We were pleased and satisfyed to stay at the South American Copacabana.

Nicely placed hotel. In Europe this would be called a good midrange hotel. The ration of quality and price is not right but not any more wrong than elsewhere in Rio. It's clean, well located.... breakfast is good, it's safe. Internet is average... for business purposes probably not working well enough, privately ok.

Rooms are a bit dark and not really noise insulated, but tidy and functional. Air con working well.

Staff is generally helpful. Depends on the shift though. The two guys from the afternoon shift were excellent, the morning female shift was rubbish. Boss of the customer defense I think... seemed like a burden to her.
