“Better than expected”
Reviewed March 22, 2014

Many years ago I was an AFS student who was blessed to live with a Brazilian family in Leblon for a year. This February I returned (not for the first time) to Rio, with a group of friends for Carnaval. Three of us shared a room on the 12th floor. I expected two beds and a cot, but we had three single beds, arranged along one long wall. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. The room was not big, but it was adequate, and there was an ocean peek from the one small window. The a/c worked well, and the bathroom had a good shower with fine water pressure and decent towels (two items that are not always up to par in Brasil). The breakfast was very nice; good coffee, lots of fresh fruits, juices, pastries, breads, cheeses, meats, and scrambled eggs (I didn't eat eggs though) which is included in the price of the room. I ate dinner in the hotel two nights, and it was good (although the fish was a little too salty) inexpensive, and convenient. The dining room service was friendly and responsive. Internet was very intermittent, and did not work at all in the room. The pool is about 6 feet x 6 feet--only kids used it, but the rooftop deck where the pool is located has a great view. This is not a luxury property, but it exceeded my expectations based on the other reviews I read on TripAdvisor. Having lived in Rio, the only reason I went during Carnaval is that that is what my friends wanted. I prefer Carnaval in a small town, and I prefer Rio any time other than Carnaval.

The hotel is very well situated on the Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. The staff is courteous and very helpful. The breakfast is wonderful with a fine variety of fresh fruit and good coffee.
The rooms are comfortable and there is wifi with access to the internet in the rooms. The hotel has a small pool and a small gym. THe location is great for walking or catching taxis.

First things first: hotels on the Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro are simply overpriced. All hotels charge premium prices for being on the Avenida Atlantica. The Orla is no exception to that rule. However, it is the cheapest among the overpriced hotels on Copacabana. And it is a good hotel.
My room was clean and tidy with a modern bathroom. Personnel was extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet is quite abundant and of good quality. The WiFi is sometimes overloaded and slow but works. The roof-top swimming pool is tiny but the terrace is a nice place to hang out in the evening and to take good night view pictures of the Copacabana.
BTW, if you want to meet the locals get up at 6:30am and start walking along the Copacabana: young, old, sportsmen, everybody is taking advantage of the cool morning hour to get some exercise and if you want a real "Cariaco"-experience, just join them.

Orla was a 2 nighter as we arrived in Rio for the start of Carnival week. Hotel is in perfect location - at the far end of Copacabana beach and only a 5 minute walk from the much nicer Ipanema, Orla offers a good breakfast which sets you up for the day, quite small rooms which are clean and have everything you need as well as a very loud plumbing system which woke us up with a jump each morning when our neighbours flushed their toilet. None the less, we slept well as it's quiet in general about the hotel. The staff were very helpful and spoke really good English, which helped as we ashamedly spoke no Portuguese apart from the basics. As a hotel to use for a couple of nights either at the start of your time in Rio or for a night before you fly home, Orla is good. It's a normal hotel, for a decent price that offers and provides to your basic needs. Nice reception, amazing roof top views up Copacabana although don't go there for the swimming pool expecting to do some lengths - it's tiny, more like a big bath or plunge pool.

So the hotel isn't amazing. Rooms ok size and just about clean. The rooftop pool is small but functional and has great views across the beach.

Breakfast was pretty basic but suited our needs to get some food before exploring Rio.

If you are not planning to stay in the hotel long and need a great located room for a few days then its not too bad - any longer than a few days I would want something less basic. The staff where really helpful though.

Also the wifi is awful - so slow and couldnt connect.

We were so disappointed with our experience at the Orla Hotel. Although the location was descent, located at the end of Copacabana Beach, the hotel experience with the staff was absolutely horrible. We selected this hotel because it received descent reviews on trip advisor and I have to say I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. One of the major stipulations we had was to select a hotel with WI-FI. The Wi-Fi in this hotel was not functioning from the moment we got there. If the hotel staff would have notified us of the situation or had come with a suitable or comparable solution we would have been satisfied with the hotel, but instead the staff gave us the runaround. They told us they had no Wi-Fi and that we had to go 1 block away and utilize Wi-Fi from a company that charges for internet. We proceeded to tell the staff that it was necessary to have Wi-Fi for business purposes and asked to check-out and provide us with a full refund because they could not provide Wi-Fi. The told us that they could not provide a refund due to the fact that we booked on Expedia. So they were at least gracious enough to allow us to utilize their phone to call Expedia to see what measures we needed to get a refund. We explained to Expedia that the hotel could not provide a service the website had indicated and we simply wanted a refund so that we may check-in a hotel that had Wi-Fi. Expedia said it would be no problem to receive a refund on their end as long as the hotel could give them ok to give a refund back. The hotel manager and employee had indicated that the only person that was allowed to give the ok was gone for 10 days for El Carnival. I was flabbergasted that not one person could provide the ok and equally shocked that the one person that could make major decisions for a hotel is absent during the busiest time of the year. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!! The dishonesty this staff portrayed was the worst and although the hotel is located close to Copacabana beach (not beachfront because their is a major intersection you need to cross to get to the beach) the simple fact is the dishonesty from this staff was bar none the worst I had ever encountered. Businesses that are dishonest I totally do not recommend.

The Orla is near the end of Copacabana Beach and close to Ipanema and Leblon Beaches. Thus, we could walk all three beaches and walk to wonderful restaurants as well. The view from the hotel is spectacular. Ask for a room with a view as it is so worth it. You can see the beach and Sugar Loaf from your room. Breakfast was very good and fresh.

We needed help to learn how to set up the code for the safe. They were there immediately to help. The room was clean and comfortable. We got on room and 10th floor so we were not bothered by noise.
