I would've given this hotel five stars if the room would have lived up to the main areas (lobby and breakfast room), but I just couldn't. The location is great if you're looking to hit the beach and downtown shopping. The beach is directly across the street and downtown is one block the other way. The full breakfast is exceptional as well. Unfortunately, the rooms do not live up to all the other amenities. Not even the hallways. The room is threadbare at best. Tiny twin beds and mattress. But the price was great for the beach and accessibility to transportation.

Stayed here between April 25 and April 29 2012.
Bad:
Do NOT stay here if you need reliable internet access. The WiFi connection throughout the hotel is atrocious. We actually saw businessmen checking out early and asking for their money back because the internet access was so bad - even plugged into a cable in the business centre. Incredibly frustrating!
Noise - The public areas of the hotel have been refurbished and I suspect they are now in the process of refreshing some of the rooms. Do NOT stay here if you want to be in your room during the day. We were on the 5th floor and the incessant banging and drilling were unbearable and relentless - started at 9am and went on til 6pm. Really not good if you're a late sleeper or, like me, you are a bit jetlagged and want a nap in the afternoon. It's not going to happen.
Good:
Food in the restaurant is great, the breakfast buffet included in the price is huge, delicious and really good value. Staff are super friendly and helpful, the location is fantastic - right on the beach and the rooms, though pokey and dated, are clean and neat and all have a sea view. Once the refurbishment is finished this place will be great, and excellent value, but at the moment, it has its annoyances.

Do not be fooled by the nice looks of the hotel entrance, lobby and restaurants.

Rooms are in a bad state and they need to be refurbished ASAP. The bathroom is old and it really makes you feel uncomfortable. The beds are old and the closet dates from at least 30 years ago.

Location is good, breakfast is pretty nice, Internet connection works fine....no problems there. The main problem is that when you go back to the hotel the only place where you do not want to be is your room! And not because the rest of the hotel is to die for, simply because your room is of very low standards.

Rio is overpriced and most definitely you never get what you pay for however paying for something that it so obviously in need of a facelift.....no thank you!

My advice? Look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Only Suites have been refurbished.

The lobby is very nice but the rooms do not reflect a 3 or 4 star hotel. The bed was actually comfortable and my room was clean. The problem is that it's not cozy and the TV is VERY old. The breakfast was good (some of the fruit seemed spoiled... yuck... they should be more concerned about food safety! The scrambled eggs from the buffett were cold as ice). The waiters/waitresses were very hospitable though. They lend you beach towels and umbrella at the lobby to enjoy beautiful copacabana beach. The WIFI is supposed to be $15 but i chose the option for slow connection... it was fine... wasn't as slow as I expected and it was free. Don't even bother with the gym, it's small, hot and humid... better to go for a run at the boardwalk!

Room Tip: My room was just OK comparing to other stories, it was 302 but there's no view.

My experience with this hotel was very bad. My room was very very small and dirty. As I was unpacking, I saw a 3cm long cockroach crawling from under one of the beds.... It was a very unpleasent situation and I had to close all my bags at once. The fridge had leftovers from previous customers and was full of water... The shower had a grid on top and during the day you could see through it and watch the concrete and some day light probably from a hole in a wall... As other reviews mention, the lobby is all remodeled and it is very fancy indeed, but the rooms have nothing to do with it - it seems a completely different hotel. The food was ok but in my opinion, there's no location or food that can balance a dirty old room with roaches, where you are supposed to sleep comfortable and keep your clothes and other personal stuff out of your bags. Do not recommend.

There should be new terms coined for extreme situations ! And there should be a way to prevent hotels of giving unsuitable sized rooms at unacceptable prices !
Little did I know a few years ago when i booked through Expedia in Waikiki ,Honolulu at the Ilikai hotel - receiving a 40 square meter room that the wardrobe there will be the size of my room in Rio . 6 square meters for a double room at 200$ gives you the "sardine" syndrome !
The ordeal went on when we asked to change the room - the come , come again and later were topped by sending us the "see" another room which was the EXACT same room at another floor !
Now that`s what I call scandalous !
So before you take your room at this hotel ask to see it - least you become the next sardine
