“Not too bad”
Reviewed February 8, 2013 via mobile

The hotel is very well located! It's close to the beach in a nice area full of restaurants and bars! The place to be is ipanema but it's not far from thi area! I liked it very much. Close to the hotel there are also shops and shopping mall. The metro station to Ipanema and Leblon is 4 minutes walking from here, the rooms are standard old fashion but comfortable! I like it! Rio is safe you cam go out at night and, you can use your iphone naturally everybody has got one! Don't believe anyone who scares you with general danger!the city is controlled by the police!

We took the Real Onibus (2018) from GIG that travels to the South Zone, costs $6, and takes anywhere from 1 hour getting to the hotel and 2 hours getting back to the airport depending on the time of day and traffic. It's very clean and safe, but you'll need to exchange money to pay the driver.

We got a room on the 11th floor facing the front of the hotel and although it was annoying to use the 2 small elevators it was nice to be high up from the street noise. We ran our noisy A/C to cover up the noise from outdoors. I've never used elevators that only have 1 button so you never knew if it was going up or going down so it stopped alot unneccessarily.

The breakfast room is on the 2nd floor and was very good. I loved the sweet cake selection which was not exactly the same each day, and I made my own hot chocolate. One day they had shrimp "cakes", there were lots of juice choices, and the fresh fruit was great.

They have free wi-fi if you ask how to access it. There were a couple of computers in the lobby that I assume were free, but I did not use them. They lobby is very spacious and we enjoyed sittling there on our last day as we picked up our luggage that we had stored on the way back to the airport.

The city buses are very easy to use to see the city. You just have to know which way you need to be going to you can choose the correct street to catch them. We just asked at the hotel which street to go to and they would give us a list of bus numbers that would work for wherever we were going. Usually you would take one bus number going somewhere and one number up or down for the return trip. The buses cost less than $1.50 for each trip which is paid in cash to either the driver or their assistant that controls that turnstile to get on and you exit from the back. It's sometimes necessary to pull the rope in the ceiling to get them to stop where you need to go, but it was easy to find the bus routes as we were traveling on the map we got at the hotel.

The hotel rooms are small, but adequate and the bathroom was nice. We had some ants which I sprayed with mosquito spray so we made sure to not leave any of our luggage sitting on the floor. The bed was fine - no complaints - like everyone else seemed to have. It was a little annoying to have to use the room key to turn on the power to everything and the light and A/C switches are on a panel over the bed on the headboard.

There are lots of little stores, bakeries, bars, and restaurants all around the hotel. If you need an international ATM there is one in a drugstore just down the street from the hotel. The front desk staff was very helpful with directions. There was always at least one person on duty that spoke English.

The hotel is in a great location just a couple of blocks from Copacabana beach and it felt very safe walking all around the area. We took the bus to and walked back from Ipanema beach and we were very disappointed. Ipanema beach is like a trash dump. I have never seen so much trash on the shoreline. Copacabana beach is so much better and cleaner. There are lots of people selling things on the beach, but they weren't annoying for the most part. We bought a few things from them, but no one seemed to want to bargain like they do in other countries.

We visited the Christ the Redeemer Statue and the Botanical Gardens and both were very entertaining. There seemed to be lots of buffet style restaurants that weighed your food. We tried one in the Catete area and it had a wide variety of tasty food. We enjoyed some of the small local restaurants on Copacabana Ave for very cheap. We ate at Pizza in a Cone on Copacabana beach and were annoyed that they charged us both a service fee and "tickets" for the guitar player that we didn't even care about.

Overall the hotel is in a great area, very safe, and I would recommend it to others.

We stayed just one night in the most uncomfortable bed of our whole 2 month trip in South America. Rooms are basic, but mostly clean. The corridors to the rooms are dark and dank with little ventilation. The hotel is old, But not cheap, although we did get a better rate on the Internet. The location is good, a 2 block walk at the south end of Copacabana beach. Lots of buses and shops and restaurants. It is loud at night and can be a bit "seedy" .
The saving grace was staff! Very helpful and kind, they even helped us find an apartment to move into! Breakfast was ok, a typical south American buffet, lots of cakes, but eggs and sausage and fruit available.
A pool was on top floor, old but great for a evening drink and swim.
Our tip, look at Leme end of Copacabana beach, a bit more upmarket and cleaner, or head to Ipanema beach, which we found better.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the quiter, but rio is noisy regardless.

I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights and whilst the location is good, its safe, I have stayed in better hotels, for a lesser price. The rooms are basic, however, the hairdryer was not working and when I notified the reception I was given a hairdryer without a nozel, and when I tried to switch it on, it cut out and smelled of burning electrics. The reception are not very helpful. The fridge in the room was noisy and I hardly got any sleep. My room faced a block of flats and the noise was unbearable even when the windows were closed. I would not go back!

Very clean acomodations. Comfortable beds. Excellent breakfast buffet, a real feast. Knowledgeable and helpfull staff. Cannot beat the price. Only 3 blocks away on Atlantic Avenue the price was double. Hotel is close to everything. Only 5 minutes from Copacabana Beach. Restaurants and bakeries on every corner (literally). Very safe.Family of three (teenager included). Go hang gliding (tamdem flight) unforgetable experience.
We hired a guide/driver Mr. Carlos Murillo. Ask for him at the front desk. Very honest and pleasant person. He drove us wherever we wanted to go. You tell him all the places you want to visit, and he will give you a set price, in our case, even drove us back to the airport.

Room Tip: For a family of three, request 3 single beds, it will give more sleeping room.

The hotel is literally 2 blocks from the beach, which was incredibly convenient. I felt safe walking around there at night (which I did, on my own and also with my friends). It's easy to catch a bus or a van from the main street (right in front of the beach). The staff was helpful despite some language barriers, and very accommodating. The room and the hotel were clean and although the pool is small (great for small children!) the sauna is quite nice. None of us (there were 3 of us) decided to pay for wifi because of the reviews we had read on this website, but there are a couple of places nearby you can go to that will charge you a fee for using the internet - not a huge deal. For a relatively expensive city, this was a good deal and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Room Tip: I asked them for a room on one of the higher floors so as to minimize street noise. We had no proble...
