“Good location, small rooms”
Reviewed October 21, 2009

This is a modern 14 storey hotel just one block away from Copacabana beach. There are local shops for water etc within a few minutes walk of the hotel and an ATM just over the road at HSBC Bank. The hotel is clean and offers a good breakfast buffet. Staff seem friendly and helpful. The dinner buffet and a la carte are nothing special for the price. Try Gula Gula restaurant in Ipanema for good food, or Arab on the promenade at Copacabana. The rooms are very small with little space to move around in especially with two large suit cases - they are OK for a couple of nights, but one would need more space if staying longer. Bathrooms though were more than adequate

This was one of the designated "conference" hotels so we stayed there with other participants. Otherwise Ipanema is the much better location. The room was spotless, breakfast was great and the staff very helpful. We enjoyed the good caipirinhas at the roof top bar. We booked through http://www.brazilianvacation.com and got better rates than the conference offered.

We had a great time at this hotel. The rooms were clean, the staff were friendly (although we did catch one of them just pretending to understand what we were saying when we spoke English).

Many people have commented about the lack of net curtains, but I can only assume they didn't notice the windows are mirrored so you're pretty much invisible! The black out blinds were great for napping after the carnival all night.

Breakfast was a great selection with attentive waiters and the pool on the roof is small, but perfectly formed with a nice quiet bar to unwind after a long day sightseeing. The beach is only a short walk away , there are a number of nearby restaurants and a metro station. Bring comfortable shoes as walking really is the best way to see the city.

My husband and I travelled for business and were very satisfied with the professional staff, but the rooms are terrible. First of all, the rooms are extremely dim and we faced other windows. Since the curtains were black out curtains, natural light was at a minimum. secondly, the bedding and towels were pretty awful. Rough sheets, rough towels, no wash cloths, and very ugly and dated decor. Third, the walls were super thin. We were awakened regularly by noises in the hall, others showering and flushing, and incessant pipes "squeeling". The final "noisy" straw was the German soprano who practiced in her room for three hours while my husband tried vainly to work. She was part of some performance group who was having a concert in Rio. We really dont mind opera, but that was just awful.
This was his 5th trip to Rio and my second. We were booked into the Windsor Plaza by his company's travel provider in Brazil. Usually we stay at the Marriot Copacabana. Next time we book our own lodging. Guess our standard of comfy, quiet, and well lit rooms is a little demanding.
The plus side: the breakfast buffet included in the room had loads of great fruit and the roof top pool was a nice place to lay out undisturbed.

After one night I moved out of the Plaza. The aircon did not work well and the room was very hot and stuffy. To make matters worse, there were no non smoking rooms available. The twin beds were saggy and uncomfortable. The location is on a very busy road with no glimpse of the beach.

On 3 separate occasions I tried to log on - wireless and cable and could not get on-line, even with 2 interventions of the hotel staff. This is not a hotel for business travellers.

The front desk were very professional and helpful but could not make up for a tired, depressing and stuffy rooms.

If you just want a place to crash then this is the hotel for you. If you plan to spend time in your room working or relaxing - find something better and more comfortable. All the other reviews are correct so I won't repeat here. Nobody has mentioned the awful towels, thin and rough and no wash cloths. This is a lower-2-star by American standards (e.g. Motel 6).

Rooms are very dim and windows open up facing apartment buildings - there are NO privacy curtains, just black-out curtains. So you are stuck with the artificial light.

Floors are pergo wood (for cleanliness reasons this is great!) and the bed is anti-bed bug (which made me feel a little better about this place). Pillows are flat and bedding is like the towels thin and rough.

The pool and bar on the roof are smaller than in the pictures and the work out room is a joke. The cardio equipment is old and doesn't work well. You are better off going for a jog or a walk on the beach.

Front desk staff is very friendly and helpful. I didn't try to breakfast. I suggest you skip Copacabana and do some reasearch into staying in Ipanema!
