“Great Staff and good location.”
Reviewed April 30, 2012

The breakfast was great, crowded but replenished with a nice variety. The view was great and the bathroom and mini bar were sufficient. Staff was super cool. Thanks.

Staff were quite helpful, but could not offer any excursions unless they were paid for in cash. Bedroom carpet filthy, stains everywhere. Room had a horrible smell so tried to open window - mistake...it would not close again! The location was excellent, and the breakfast was very good too, but would not want to stay there again.

Room Tip: Not sure if there are any, as we had paid for a luxury room through Trailfinders and ended up in a r...

I'll start off with the great things about the hotel: the friendly, efficient staff and the perfect location. The hotel is in a great location in Copacabana, as close as you can get to the beach, and with lots of shops and restaurants nearby. The breakfast was terrific, but don't go for soggy scrambled eggs. There are delicious, tropical fruit and a wide variety of breads and cakes, the typical Brazilian breakfast. There was also wireless internet. Even though it worked only about 80 percent of the time I was there, it was free. Now for the negatives... the worst was the nasty odor. My room smelled like urine. The hotel is in desperate need of renovation, but probably feels dirtier than it actually is because of the odor. Also, the window of my room faced other apartments, so if I opened the curtain other people could see me. However, there are only black-out drapes, so if I closed them the room was very dark. Simple solution: a lighter curtain to line the drapes. What bothered me the most was that the hotel is listed as a 4-star. Had it been more appropriately listed as a 2-star, my expectations would have been on par with the reality of the property.

I was recently in Rio for Carnaval, and stayed at the Olinda Othon. The hotel itself is a little bit older, but it is in the perfect location in Copacabana. It is right in the middle of the neighborhood, and is right on the beach. The only problems in the room that I noticed was: the shower is kind of small, and it's very easy to get water in the rest of the bathroom. The beds were also kind of small, and were fairly comfortable. The air conditioners in the rooms also leaked a little bit. The staff at the hotel was great. No one in our group spoke great Portuguese, and the staff did a great job of working with us, and letting us know where good locations to go to for Carnaval were.

Overall, I would say that this hotel is good for people looking to go to Rio, and stay right on the beach, but you cannot be picky about little problems that the room may have. When we stayed there it was a good situation for us, because all we really needed was a place to crash at night.

Do not stay at this hotel!!!!!

I was there in the beginning of February 2012... And the only thing I am sorry for is not taking pictures and movies of this hotel! Totally overpriced, horrible stained rooms, I changed 3 rooms because of the missing cleanliness ... Horrible bathrooms. Taxis in front always extra-charge you! Breakfast is ok but without choices. Generally, just go in another place.

Apart fron the location, this hotel is awfull. The carpet in all the rooms is dirty, the a/c does not work and the outside windows probably date from the 20's. To continue, the staff doesn't speak any language except potughese is mostly unhelpfull and lacks any training whatsoever. All this for nearly 300 euros/ night.

The Olinda Rio Hotel is an old hotel right on Copacabana Beach. We stayed two nights and loved being in the centre of the action. The hotel is a little tired and needs some TLC, but the $255 per night was cheap compared to lots of the other hotels on this stretch of beach. Hopefully the new owners will do something about the restaurant, which is used to serve the included continental breakfast, but lacks any imagination, culinary skill - or when we were thre customers. They had only one menu. Good thing my husband and I were the only people in the restaurant all three times we ate there. The people at the desk spoke English but the bar and restaurant staff were strickly Portugese speaking which was a challenge for us.

Room Tip: If you don't have an ocean view don't bother staying here. That's the only great thing...
