“A great classic hotel”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

I took my parents on one of the Exclusive journeys by Charming Destinations, were we got to stay at the top hotels through our whole 18 day trip to Brazil. Copacabana Palace was our first stop, and we were not disappointed! We loved the old fashioned feel of the hotel, an excellent location just across the beach of Copacabana, the nice hall with pictures of royalties who stayed here, the amazing pool, etc. We had an excellent feijoada (national Brazilian dish) one a Saturday afternoon at their restaurant by the pool, highly recommended. Overall, we loved everything about our stay here. It's expensive, but worth it, if you are on vacation and can afford it...

Room Tip: choose the one with a sea view. Expensive, but worth it!

i stayed there in june for 3 days and was surprised how bad actually a socalled leading hotel of the world could be in service . this would be a 3 star hotel in europe, by far not a 5 tar place, but obviously you have to lower your expectations (and bank account hahaha!) when you decide to stay in rio de janeiro.
the place from outside an eternal beauty, inside they got rid of all enchantment, not even the nice little souvenir shop remained. in rder to get some stuff please buy at the spa. the weekend i stayed was exactly when the confederation cup ended so it was crowded and the staff was even more listless than last time (thought this was impossible but yes :) . fortunately i didnt have to pay for the stay so it was fine with me.
the pool was crowded with little fat tourists lacking the slightest notion of elegance ,exhibiting their well-formed 400 pound curves. quite a thing whilst you are having a 200 us meal but just push the chair towards the other side :) . the lobby actually is the nicest thing. once in my 3892 plus tax room (or 1600us per night ,haha!) you are entering a time capsula . it looks like the set from golden girls or different strokes. at least no need to sleep to live a nightmare. small rooms, nice view. breakfast was very good ,just again masses of illustrious guests (i am being sarcastic!) and actually overpriced like the whole city.
the location is very nice , directly on avenida atlantica with its dated restaurants and overcharged rip off joints.
try to have some sushi or a drink instead in one of the beach quiosques, booths which are quite a find compared to pseudo italian restaurants that want to charge you 40 us for lasagne,or 30 for some listlessly made pizza.
would i come back to the hotel? any time my company decides to pay for it,yes. would i pay for it ? never ever :)
peninsula beverly hills prices for travelodge room appeal and even worse staff ? come on ...

Room Tip: choose a different city, or at least an oceanfront room :)

I stayed there for two weeks at the end of June 2013 in a suite overlooking the Copacabana beach. As much as I loved the service, very efficient and responsive, definitely on par with my expectation for such a legendary hotel, I was very disappointed by the rooms and the decoration in general. The room I was in was of such bad taste and felt like it has not been upgraded since the 80's.
The bathroom in particular is embarrassing for a hotel of this class with its run-down taps and shower, its scratched tub and cheap shelves. The soap and shampoos are also below par.
The duvet was totally misplaced, a very heavy cotton-filled duvet in a country where the average temperatures are indeed high: truly a cheap and uncomfortable duvet that has no place in a five stars. The furniture pretty much everywhere in the hotel is tacky and does not even have an old-fashioned charm apart from some areas like the corridor along the pool has or the lovely old-style elevators in the Cipriani building. I visited the renovated part of the hotel and the rooms are better but still not great and a lot more expensive. Not worth it in my opinion.
The gym is ok but not fab but that's easily compensated for those who want to run by the jog on the beach.
Also Copacabana beach is very nice but certainly does not have the same shopping, restaurants and hipness attraction of its much more expensive neighbours: Ipanema and Leblon.
There is not much to do in the neighbourhood when you have a couple of hours to kill or if you want to go to a nearby restaurant.
The outdoor pool is very nice and I loved the Cipriani restaurant although it was freezing cold. Much colder than in the other parts of the hotel. It looks like in Rio the more expensive the restaurant, the colder it has to be... unfortunately. but the food was delicious.
A pity that the Cipriani chef does not arrange the breakfast as it is pretty average. I am always sensitive to breakfasts because I always stay for a long time but nevertheless this one had some good things (the selection of fruits, the viennoiserie for those who like it) but was lacking of quality breads, of nice cold cuts, with cheap smoked salmon and other things...
I also found the concierge very helpful with straightforward opinions on restaurants.
All in all I don't think it is a good value but the big question is: what is in Rio? as everything here is so incredibly overpriced... hence the people's unrest in the country when I was there.
So it was fine but really not exceptional as its prices and reputation would lead you to think.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go in the main building for a renovated room. You have to be facing the beach...

Just came back from a 5 night stay at the Copacabana Palace. We had a city view room in the annex building. I believe these rooms are newer as it was in good condition, very clean, and plenty of space in the bathroom. The bathroom had 2 sinks, plenty of storage area, and a big soaking tub. The room had a balcony, but no balcony furniture. The service everywhere in the hotel is very good. We were never told no to any request. It is an old world, classic atmosphere which carries a very elegant and classy feel to it. Having cocktails in the evening poolside was very nice. Turn down service every night is a very nice touch. The room was cleaned very early in the day which is exactly how it should be done. The location to the beach is excellent, just across the street. There is a person on the beach that helps you with lounge chairs, towels, and water. The location around the hotel unfortunately is not very well kept, but not really any different than any other part of Rio. All neighborhoods are accessible from here via a short taxi ride. Fabulous breakfast buffet every morning. It was the same every day, fabulous coffee, my cup was always refilled. A complimentary abridged version of the NY Times was supplied every day. Overall a great stay and I would stay again and recommend to other travelers.

I probably shouldn't be writing this review, as I haven't stayed here for quite some, though certainly have logged more than 15 visits. When people select this hotel, they need to understand that this is a classic luxury hotel with the charm/splendor of days long past, a rare hotel these days (appreciate it). Don't look for glass, chrome and cooky-cutter rooms. The hotel rooms vary dramatically in size, except for those in the newer annex, so understand what you are getting. The staff are warm and friendly. But this is Rio and no one is in a hurry...enjoy the relaxed pace rather than challenging it. As others have noted, the classic Brazilian breakfast buffet is fantastic. Its pool is one of the best in Copacabana. Yes, the lobby is small, but who goes to Rio to hang-out in a lobby. The Lido area is what you make of it, and it can be a bit seedy at night, but there excellent restaurants around every corner, or just sit in an outdoor cafe, sip a beer and people watch. Rio is a place that requires one to adapt more than most cities, but that's when you enjoy it the most.

Copacabana Palace Hotel is located in front of the Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This hotel is very atractive, it's like a 60´s luxury hotel, but with all of the facilities we have in present. If you've heard of the weather in Rio de Janeiro, it's very very hot, but in your room, you have the temperature you want, anytime.

The hotel has a very lovely staff, by all it means... You will find yourself at home, since the start.

Inside the hotel is located the most expensive and luxurious restaurant in South America, The Cipriano Restaurant. The food is amazing, the meals are exquisit.

The hotel offers the breakfast, an amazing breakfast, the bread, the pancakes, the cheeses, the fruits, the coffe, the tea, everything is magnificent. The hotel has an olympic pool, when i was there i didn't even used the pool, because i went for a few days to Rio, and there was no time to relax in the hotel, such a shame... but still i had a great stay.

The hotel has a spa, a gym, and a tennis square, you will never get bored inside.

As i said before, the decoration of the entire hotel is vintage inspired, in every detail, Charming and very cozy.

Not to mention about a five star hotel, this hotel is exceptionally clean, every second of the year.

Copacabana Palace, a journey like no other.

Room Tip: Rooms with ocean view are excellent. And more higher, better view.
