Top-notch hotel, only stayed a night because was passing through on business. The hotel was under pretty heavy renovation but they did a decent job of hiding it. The only complaint in regards to that was that does one have to start hammering at 7:30 AM on a Saturday (Friday night in Rio not being a typical early to bed night)? Anyway, this aside, the pool and scene and views are amazing, the hotel's beach area fantastic, and we loved the VIP access to the club (definitely a SCENE). No other place to go, and certainly the most secure.

I always try to stay here when I'm in Rio, it has recently undergone a major renovation. The rooms are very comfortable and the service is excellent. We stayed in the tower block which only appears to have suites but they are very large and very comfortable.

Room Tip: Obviously the Ocean and pool views are best.

I would say that this is a very nice property with friendly staff members and decent rooms, but I just did not feel the magic that everybody were raving about. The location is actually not that great, there are much safer and more comfortable areas of Rio like Ipanema or Leblon Beach.

Left feeling like we spent money for a five star hotel but got a four star place in a pretty shabby area.

Arrived at the hotel at 2pm on Nov24, and the room should be ready at 4pm, as agreed. The bellboy left our luggage unattended, what was upsetting, but ok. I was only allowed to the room at 4.30pm, and asked to wait in the business centre until then, because reception could not give me a precise timeframe to finish the cleaning process. The air conditioning was noisy in the bedroom, but the weather was gentle enough to allow a postponement in my complaint. On Nov25, my husband and I went to the hotel pool (great, by the way) with robes provided by the hotel. The pool staff was not really busy because of the rainny day, but it took them a while to deliver menus and towels when requested to do so. When we were back to our room to get ready for an appointment, our key could not open the door. Housekeeping had the same problem, and security was warned, but did not solve the problem until us guests arrived. And it took us two or three calls to the reception desk and a 30-minute wait in the floor lobby for the manager to arrive with security staff. This would be unpleasant per se, but if you add that we were coming from the pool, soaked and in robes, one would expect that the staff had been more efficient. And it took them another 30 min or so to arrange the door - so staff was dealing with our bedroom door while we were showering for our appointment. The manager on duty did give us a discount for one daily rate, and was polite, but the whole experience was really disappointing. And the reception desk asked us "how did we like our stay" at check-out - which showed they did not communicate internally, because an apology would definitely fit better. I evaluated them in the Orient Express form more than a week ago, and no contact so far.

It pains me to give the Copacabana Palace a “3” rating because the hotel is really wonderful - - or will be soon. My rating stems from the fact that there is a huge amount of construction and renovation going on in the main building (where we stayed in an ocean view room) that is quite disruptive. I’d heard about this work several months ago so made inquiries both through my agent and to the hotel itself. The hotel staff assured me a few months ago that the renovation and construction work would be finished by early November so that our stay the last week of November would be quiet. My agent also had this same assurance via the local tour operator in Rio. Not only is the work not finished it appears to be a project that will last well into 2013. So, it was this deception on the part of the hotel staff that leads to my “3” rating. Also, the reception desk personnel told me upon arrival that construction work would not start each day until 9:30AM and would end by 6:00PM. In reality, construction started each day around 7:30AM and often did not stop until 7:00PM. Our fourth and final night there was construction noise coming from the floor below us and I, along with several other guests, had to complain at around 10:00PM to get it stopped. I know that other guests complained because the reception desk personnel told me that others had also complained.

This renovation and construction is not trivial. Scaffolding, exterior elevating platforms, generators on the side street, large crew in hard hats, and plenty of sanding, pounding, sawing, and drilling on multiple floors.

Other aspects of the hotel are great. The renovated rooms are wonderful, the pool is great, and the restaurants are really fine, especially the Ristorante Cipriani which was spectacular. The Cipriani Bar is terrific, too. I strongly suggest that you not book with the Copacabana Palace for about six months. After that I am very sure that it will fully deserve a “5” rating. The service is superb and ambience of the finished part of the renovation is world class.

Room Tip: Once renovation is complete I suggest an ocean view room in the main building. They have double win...

Stayed in September 2012 for 5 nights.

Great friendly welcome on arrival and the check in process was friendly and slick.

The room was great, plenty of space and a nice bathroom.

Breakfast was next to the pool every day and there was a large choice of cold and hot dishes

We arranged to eat in the poolside restaurant for one evening of our stay. Unfortunately this was the only downside. We were not offered the full dinner menu (if it was not available that wasn't explained), served some drinks and then seemingly were forgotten about by our waiter and the maitre d' when one of us attempted to approach him to complain. In the end we got up and left and found somewhere else to have dinner.

The location is great, right on Copacabana beach but I preferred the buzz of bars and restaurants at Ipanema much more.

We occupied a poolside suite, said to be the most desireable rooms. The bathroom and the suite ($1300 nightly) had a recurring sewer odor which management couldn't resolve, and we were told there were no other rooms available.
The location is isolated from restaurants and shopping of interest. Strret noise is oppressive.
The fine dining restaurant was outstanding as was service generally.
It's time to make the place into a museum. Stay in the Ipanema/Lebon area unless you're a nostalgia buff.

Room Tip: Find another hotel.

Dear Guest,
Thank for posting your comments. Concerning to the odor, indeed the ideal solution was to evacuate the room in order to verify the sewer system but, due to the full occupancy, it was not possible to change you to another room. Please accept our apologies for the inconveniences.

We would like to add that we are very grateful to read about our restaurants and service. Next time you come to Rio, please ask our Concierge about other restaurants and shops in the surrounding area of the Hotel. And Talking about shops, we strongly recommend you to know our new boutique.

Best Regards,
