I recently enjoyed a Baazilian vacation which started with a few days in Rio, at the Porto Bay. The pros: great location (right at the top of Copacabana beach), great views (I had one of the "deluxe" corner rooms which offer 90 degree views of the oceanfront and down Copacabana beach), and a fantastic hot breakfast buffet. The cons: dated, cheaply done decor - reminded me of those 1980s off-white laminate kitchens with oak trim, not a whole lot of amenities (although the rooftop pool was very nice), not a lot of service (no real concierge service), and the price. The room I was in is advertised at about US $425, which seems rather a lot for a hotel with basic amenities and basic decor. The drinks and food at the pool bar were outrageous, running about $15 a drink or so.

This hotel needs some maintenance. If you are looking for a high end vacation and you are willing to pay for it, take your $425 next door to the Orient Express chain's FABULOUS Copacabana Palace. For $300 more a night, you will thank yourself..

Our introduction to So America's hotels was Porto Bay Rio & it became the standard we used in the whole trip! This is one of the better hotels we stayed in. You can't beat the location, its right on Copacobana Beach and is walking distance to restaurants, shops, convenient stores, banks, etc... The staff was very friendly, helpful, and patient with tourists like us who want to explore Rio on our own! Breakfast was very good, lots of variety, lots of fresh tropical fruits as well. The bed was comfortable, room clean. And the view from the rooftop is fantastic!

This Hotel is located right next to the Copacabana beach, and in walking distance to great restaurants and shops. Moreover, this hotel is a great starting point for all kinds of excursions. The service is perfect, and the drinks served at the rooftop bar just perfectly finish up a beautiful day in Rio.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with balcony on the higher floors (18th and up). These will give you a perfect vie...

I was really excited to stay at this hotel. Pleasant amenities upon check-in (glass of sparkling wine, etc) but I found the hotel severely lacking in upkeep and my room could have been kept cleaner. I would stay again, but not so excitedly.

My family and I stayed at this hotel for one night ( unfortunately...) only...
The check in was very quick and the front desk staff very helpfull.
The best thing about this hotel is the location!!! Located in Copacabana beach it has absolutely amazing views!!!
We also loved the breakfast! A great selection of fruits, natural juices and breads made my day!
The room was very comfortable and I absolutely loved the flip flops with the Hotel logo that we received as a gift:) very useful!
The place to stay when visiting Rio either on business or leisure !!!!

We stayed here for 4 nights in September on our first trip to Brazil and would recommend this hotel based on it's location, views, front desk staff and rooftop terrace. For the price, the rooms aren't anything special but they are comfortable, clean and have everything you need. We particularly enjoyed the little balcony with views of Copacabana and Christ the Redeemer. The front desk staff were incredibly helpful with everything we needed and we stored our bags on the last day which was really useful. All of our belongings were safe in the hotel rooms and in storage at reception. The buffet breakfast is great. The only negatives about this hotel are the charge for wifi - around $20 a day which is ridiculous when you're paying a lot for a room! The hotel also overcharges for tours and hotel transfers. Don't get the hotel taxis - just flag one down on the road outside.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor

After staying at a Ipanema hostel for our first few nights in Rio we wanted to go upmarket for our last few nights and checked out a few hotel options. Hotel Fasano seemed very nice but the cheapest room was AUD$1000 a night and that didn't include ocean views. We also checked out the Copacabana Palace which wasn't much cheaper and was undergoing a pre-World Cup facelift so there was renovations going on everywhere.

After shopping around for a few others we chose Porto Bay Rio and were very impressed! We walked in a few days before and found the reception staff were very welcoming and friendly (they didn't refer us to a desk phone to check availability like others). We were able to negotiate a cheaper deal for 3 nights just by asking - they took about 15% off - and it was less than half the cost of the above-mentioned hotels. We opted for the suite - all suites front on to Copacabana Beach.

The glass of champagne was a nice touch upon checking in. The concierge was very friendly and spoke great English. The room itself was spacious: lounge room area, large bed/bedroom, large bathroom, and great balcony overlooking the beach (try and ask for a higher level for a better view). The room was well appointed, clean, and with good facilties. 24h room service always helps - especially after a big night out in Lapa - but the club sandwich was a bit substandard. The buffet breakfast was great with ample food and drink options within a nice relaxed environment.

But the star of Porto Bay is the definitely the rooftop pool. As fun as it was witnessing the craziness of the beach (and PB have their own section with deck chairs) it was always nice to retreat to the pool in the afternoon. Nice big deckchairs, full food and drink menu - and a great view of the beach to one side and Christ the Redeemer to the other.

It was a great end to our trip in Rio and there was nothing we could fault about the Porto Bay. It was also a good value option when compared to the aforementioned hotels which seem to charge double for not much more except for their sense of self-importance.

Room Tip: Opt for a suite on a higher level for the best views
