Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Copacabana

After reading some of the reviews I must say we were pleasantly surprised. This hotel is in a prime location and we have nothing but praise for the staff, the fabulous breakfast. It is only a little tired but very clean and overall a great place to stay. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom one of the best around. I don't understand the poor reviews. We are very particular where we stay and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone that wants a comfortable room in a prime location. Each time we requested something from either guest services or room service we were attended to immediately.

This hotel is nothing like the photos on the website. Our first room was uninhabitable as it smelled so strongly of damp with liberal amounts of room spray used in an attempt to cover up the odour. The second room was very ordinary-outdated decor, very small-not at all what one would expect for the cost of a "superior" room.Rooms were not serviced until past four in the afternoon. The pool area was grotty. Last time we were in Rio we stayed at the Copacabana Palace which was fantastic. This was similarly priced and we decided to try it based on the website. Big mistake! The staff were friendly but it was a very ordinary and costly experience which we will not be repeating. In our view the Sofitel brand is diminished by this hotel and we would not choose to stay in a Sofitel again.

This is not a five star hotel. The room I got was dirty, with a dusty carpet. The lamps were broken. The TV was tiny (I did not think they sold TVs of this size anymore) and was not working properly. It is an old, old room, with chipped furniture and a wasted carpet. Very Very 80s.
The staff was helpful and polite, the service level is good.

Everything they say about this hotel is true: outstanding location, great place to stay, friendly and helpfull staff around. Great breakfast buffet too. Bu my best experience was Victoria (Concierge staff) who adviced me to take the Rio shuttle from the hotel to visit all the must see's. I did and had a great day with Gisela, a very professional and friendly guide, perfectly bilingual.
I enjoyed my days in the Sofitel very much.

The hotel website is almost a lie - Stayed at the Sofitel Rio in a small and noisy room with dark and old furnitures - The room and the bathroom were completely outdated and must not have been refurbished for at least 15 years - The balcony was small with very limited view on the sea. The view from the bar is nice but even the pool area and gym are outdated. This hotel is more a crapy motel than a five-stars, as it is advertised. And on top of that, it is very expensive. The french Sofitel group should be shamed to sell this terrible hotel.

My wife and I stayed here prior to a luxury cruise with Regent seven Seas Cruise lines. This hotel was reputed to be among the best in Rio. Our room was very small, with a very small balcony which overlooked a swimming pool and Copacabana Beach beyond that.
The room had a jaded rundown look about it, and the bathroom had not been updated in over 30 years. The toilet paper holder was hanging from the wall, and the wallpaper itself was dirty (see the accompanying photograph). There was no bath tub, and the shower had no mixing valve, but still had the original taps from the 1970s.
Breakfast was mundane, the eating area was overcrowded and the service was exceedingly slow.
The French owners of Sofitel should be ashamed of this place.

Excellent location, efficient and courteous staff (most speak English and French), decent (although rather small) rooms, great breakfast with fantastic selection of tropical fruits.
A big disappointment for us was Sofitel's definition of an "ocean-front" room - as confirmed by their management, they call "ocean-front" any room that has even a very limited ocean view. On arrival we were assigned room 414 ( which looks mostly into wall across, although you could see some ocean if you crank your neck), then, upon our protests, we were moved to a more decent one (#718), with a view on Av Atlantica and the beach ( although, again, no direct ocean view).
