Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Copacabana
Ranked #73 of 286 Hotels in Rio de Janeiro
Reviewed May 11, 2014

Sofitel is generally a very good brand, the Copacabana property meets these standards. Location is fantastic overlooking the beach and bay, there can't be many better locations to enjoy breakfast which is of a high quality. In the evening the bar on the terrace offers a good selection of drinks and snacks and a chance to watch the world go by outside. Rooms are comfortable and depending on which side you are can have a pool or bay view.

stayed here back in november while we were touring south america and it was coming towards the end of our lovely trip, we thought we would spash out a bit as we needed a realxing couple of days. dont get me wrong hotel was lovely, bar area amazing, 2 pools, clean and tidy.

issues:
1 - staff were mostly rude could count 2 that were nice
2 - my friend was promised a beach facing room, got hotel facing room
3 - bar staff because we werent in suits the gave us no attention
4 - were given an ashtray eventually to smoke at the outside bar only for 10 mins later the bar manager to have a go at us and question why we were smoking.
5 - not ideally located.
6 - £25 for breakfast......not worth it

if i go back i would not stay here again

As many other reviews attest, this property occupies a unique location at the very end of Copacabana Beach, that allows it to also be an easy stroll to Ipanema Beach. Geographically it is suburbly located virtually on Rio's two most desirable waterfronts! Similar to virtually all major beachfront hotels in Rio, this property is not a recent construction. It is an older, but updated property that has it's work cut out to maintain a 5 star ambiance. Many of the rooms are small by luxury property standards, particularly in comparison to North America, less so for those accustomed to historic European or Asian standards. The updated laminate floors and liberal use of room fresheners betray the effort required to keep things fresh. That said the overall ambiance is current and very pleasant. As some other recent reviews have pointed out: immediately in front of this hotel, directly accross Ave Atlantica on the beachfront there is a multi-story (three stories high?) temporary scaffolding structure that has been errected to support an outdoor big-screen projection (?) that we were told will be in place for the World Cup in June 2014. This monstrosity completely blocks the view from the lower floors of the hotel down Copacabana beach. So it changes the experience from the pool deck above the lobby, and from the rooms on the lower floors that would normally enjoy the un-parralled views of Copacabana this hotel can offer. If you are expecting the waterfront view, make sure your reservation is for a higher floor in the near future. One has to hope it will be demolished as soon thereafter as possible! I could expand on the comments of others regarding limited english TV channels (or the detail that our TV didn't even work for the first day) or the leak in the fabulous spacious marble shower that left us with a wet bathroom floor everyday, but we found these to be minor annoyances. I can't agree to any dissapointments, with regard to the staff. Unlike some of the other reviews of this property, we found each and evey incounter with the staff of this property to be very engaged, professional, pleasant, and most importantly very responsive to our needs during our six day stay. The staff was outstanding, and and our stay definately worth repeating.

Room Tip: Most rooms do not face the beach. If this is important, you will need to ensure the detail in your...

It is superbly located overlooking Copacabana Beach and just adjacent to Ipanema Beach. I stayed at the Executive Floor which includes its own exclusive lounge serving snacks and drinks and breakfast buffet. Rooms are large and well appointed. Unfortunately several hiccups when checking in marred an otherwise good visit. Rooms weren't ready until about 430pm, though they kindly offered us breakfast as we arrived very early in the morning. Asked for beach view room but didn't get one. Exterior facade was being renovated so our room view included scaffolding (for which there was a written apology awaiting us in the room). It is run with efficiency but the visit would have been more enjoyable had the staff been more welcoming - a smile would have added immensely to the experience.

Just got back from three nights at Sofitel. Stayed on the seventh floor with Ocean view. It is true that renovations were going on while there - I believe they were cleaning the exterior patio doors/windows on the rooms. There is a pretty big structure being built between the hotel and beach( you will hear the noise- not loud but you can hear it - I was told it was for World Cup). Overall, the hotel is nice..Not great and not what American's would consider worth $500.00 per night but they get new customers there everyday so I don't think they really care about what we think. Had dinner at the restaurant one night. View and service was excellent but over priced for food and drinks but once again, you pay for the convenience. Beach was right across the street and a nice time. More action is toward the center of the strip so there is a walk involved for entertainment. We had zero trouble with any locals at all...Just mind your own business and drink your drinks and enjoy yourself!!!!

Room Tip: Stay seventh or eighth floor.

I stayed two nights at the Sofitel after spending three nights in central Rio. The hotel is luxurious, the room very comfortable and elegant with a large marble bathroom, wooden floors, and a very comfortable bed, and the concierges and receptionists very friendly and helpful. All the rooms have balconies, unlike many other hotels on Copacabana and Ipanema. I didn't find one single negative about this hotel at all. The price is high, but that is expected in Rio. The breakfast was terrific, and the two dinners I had there were good and reasonably priced. The view at night over Copacabana from the restaurant was spectacular.

The location was excellent--at the end of Copacabana Beach and within a short walking distance of Ipanema and right across from Fort Copacabana. I can't imagine a better choice of a hotel on the beaches.
